PREFATORY.
We present to the citizens of Asheville and public in general our 1899-1900 Asheville City Directory with the firm belief that in point of information and com- pleteness it will give entire satisfaction and reflect credit upon the city. In the canvass for the names of the citizens we find the nearest average number allowed to each name in the directory to be " three" to the white and three and one-half to the colored. (The average used in nearly all cities.)
We have recorded from A to Z of the general directory (both white and colored), 7,992 names, which shows that the population of Asheville, including Biltmore, West Asheville, Victoria, Ra- moth, etc., is 23,976.
In conclusion, we beg to return our most cordial thanks to those who have so generously given us their support, and to them we hereby dedicate this work. To the public generally who have kindly aided us in getting up the data, etc., we return our ac- knowledgments. To our patrons and the public in general, we promise to make each succeeding volume of our Asheville City Directory more worthy of commendation and patronage, and we will issue it as often as of actual necessity.
Respectfully, J. L. HILL PRINTING CO., RICHMOND, VA. THE MALONEY DIRECTORY CO., ATLANTA, GA. ) WM. M. KERSH,

Situation
Asheville is situated on a plateau 2250 feet above sea level, and is sheltered on the east and north by high mountains, while miles beyond the French Broad river on the west the mountain ranges keep out the northwest winds and snows. To the south the plateau is unbroken except by hills, and three miles Asheville's away the Vanderbilt mansion of white stone gleams and glistens in the sunlight. Right across the plateau to the south, a mile and a half from the center of the city. the beautiful Swannanoa river sweeps .toward the west and with sudden curve towards the north joins the French Broad, which flows west of the city, at the bottom of the hills, in a northerly direction. No description of the scenery in and around Asheville can be made without resort to language that would seem to those who have not visited this section, extrava- gant. So much has been said and so much written in an attempt to describe the natural beauties, and the marvelous variety of scenery that charms the eye, that language has been taxed to the utmost limit. Where nature has prepared a feast for the soul in the ever-changing and lovely mountain views, in hill and dale, peaks and valleys, and in limpid streams resplendent with the matchless rhodo- dendron, laurel and azalea, one should come and enjoy the scenery in person and not trust to the imagination that for once falls short of the reality.
Cosmopolitanism and Population
Hotels and Boarding Houses
It is a matter of common remark from those who visit Asheville that they meet here people whom they know. A few years ago a census of one of the public schoolbuildings, containing 500 pupils, was taken, to see how many of the pupils were born in Asheville. Of the total number, just 86 could speak of Asheville as their birthplace. This will give an idea of how cosmopolitan this city of 15.000 people is. There is probably not a state in the Union, not a civilized country on the globe, that has not furnished its quota of wide-awake citizens to Asheville's brisk intellectual and commercial atmosphere. Where nature has been so lavish in her gifts of indescribable and varied scenery and in her clear, bracing climate, it would be strange if the people here were unmindful of their advantages and were not making a city in keeping with the perfect surroundings. And so, elegantly equipped hotels are here, ranking with the best in the country, catering to seekers of health, pleasure and recreation, and patronized by thousands of visitors. Among these are the Battery Park, Kenilworth Inn, Swannanoa. Hotel Berkeley, Oaks, Glen Rock, Asheville, Arcadia, and Western. On account of the splendid hotel accommodations offered here Asheville is becoming widely and favorably known as one of the leading convention cities of the country. Accustomed to hand . ling large numbers of visitors all the year round, it is especially suitable for con- vention assemblies. Hotel rates are from one to four dollars per day, with capacity
(1)
Summer and Winter Resort
for fully one thousand. Scores of home-like boarding houses are here; excellent, modern flats. and beautiful private residences, occupied by refined and cultured people, many of whom are persons of wealth. Retired army and navy officers, and business and professional men have selected homes here on ac- count of health, social and educational advantages. The number of homes that are being built in the city at all times of the year is a matter of surprise to those visitors who do not know that many people who come to Asheville to remain a few months become permanent residents. This fact speaks more forcibly than any language as to the attractive- ness of this city as both a summer and winter resort. The number of visitors is increasing each year, and is about equally divided between the north and the south. This steady increase is sufficient answer to objections to Asheville raised and ex- ploited by the smaller and less scrupulous bidders for our high class patronage.
There are twenty-five churches in Asheville, including the Baptist, the Metho- dist Episcopal, the Presbyterian, Christian, Lutheran, Roman Catholic, Jewish and
Religious Interests
Unitarian. The Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian and Episcopal have congregations of colored people as well as white. The people of Asheville are largely a church-going people, and there are about 10,000 sittings.
There is a Y. M. C. A., well and strongly established and doing good work. The association has Sunday afternoon meetings, a weekly Bible class, an excellent edu- cational department, reading tables, library, gymnasium and bath rooms.
The progress in education in Asheville has been very rapid in the past ten years. The natural conditions which prevail here pre-eminently fit Asheville for Schools and. Colleges an educational center of a high order. The large number of desir- able citizens from every part of the country, attracted here by the unsurpassed climatic conditions. has made educational facilities of every kind a necessity. The total value of private and public ischool property in Asheville and its suburbs is $350,000, with an attendance of nearly 3,000 pupils.
Public and Private Schools
The graded schools were started in January 1888, and in the fall of that year the first large building was erected. To-day there are four large brick buildings, well equipped, a High School department, thirty-one teachers and one superintendent. The schools are absolutely free of political or sectarian influences, the teachers are well trained and progressive, and the popularity of the schools is attested by the large patronage of every class of society. Visitors who come to spend the winter here can, and do, bring their children and place them in the public and pri- vate schools.
Asheville College for Young Women
One of the most prominent institutions in the State is the Asheville College for Young Women, which is an outgrowth of the Dickson Seminary and the Asheville Female College. The property was bought in 1897, by Prof. A. A. Jones of Lex- ington, Mo., has been remodeled and improved in every way, and under his able management has already taken a position as an institution of the very first rank. and during the first year of the present administration it numbered among its students young ladies from twenty-three States. The College grounds are beautiful and ample, and admirably located with reference to the city. The buildings and splendid equipments, valued at $80,000, offer excellent facilities both as a com- fortable home and as a school of high order. The college faculty is composed of sixteen members. The teachers, like those of the other educational institutions of Asheville, are drawn from leading colleges and universities from all parts of the United States, thus insuring breadth of thought and thoroughness of scholarship.
Besides the courses of study usually found in first class colleges, the students in Botany and Biology, through the kindness of Mr. George W. Vanderbilt, have access to his Botanical Gardens and extensive Arboretum, which are located on his Bilt- more estate of 10,000 acres, two miles from the college. No other school presents equal advantages in this respect.
Seven years ago the famous Bingham School, after a most distinguished career of ninety-nine (99) years in middle North Carolina, was driven from its former location by three fires in less than nine years, and came to Asheville on account of the climate and with full faith in the educational possibilities of the place. The school is one of the oldest institutions of learning in the whole South and the only one which has come down from grandfather to grandson through three generations of distinguished teach- ers. The U. S. Government's Bureau of Education in Washing- ton, the highest possible authority on such a subject, says in "Contributions to
