PREFACE
Lenoir, N. C.
"Furniture Manufacturing Center of the South"
Preface
LOCATION
The City of Lenoir, situated in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Moun- tains and the gateway of the Blowing Rock region, was known as far back as just after the Civil War as a summer resort. Visitors to Blow- ing Rock always remembered Lenoir, for it was from here that they left the train and climbed 3,500 feet in twenty-three miles to the top of Blowing Rock. In those days it was a long, hard climb-now with a hard-surfaced road it can be driven in an hour on high.
Manufacturing had not been thought of. Later, however, the Har- per Furniture Company was formed and from that time industrial Lenoir started. In a brief span of time Lenoir has climbed to second place in the state and eighth in the United States in the manufacture of com- bined types of furniture-bed room, living room, dining room, desks, chairs, and other types. Lenoir industries have been developed with local capital and by local interests. Lenoir capital has gone even fur- ther than this by furnishing the impetus for a number of branches of local plants in this section of the state. The Lenoir factories are mod- ern in every respect and are enlarging and expanding constantly. The old saying that success means growth is well illustrated by these plants which now furnish Lenoir with a yearly payroll of around $3,000,000.
Furniture, however, is not the only industry in Lenoir, as there are seven cotton mills, three veneer plants, two mirror plants, a pad factory, a creamery, a flour mill, and many other smaller industries, making a total of fifty-four industrial plants in and around Lenoir.
POPULATION
The population within the corporation limits of Lenoir, according to the 1940 U. S. Census is 7,598. Several large mills are located just outside the city limits and thus increased the population to 35,800 for Caldwell County. Population Greater Lenoir, 11,911 (1941 Directory census).
TRANSPORTATION
Lenoir is located on the C & NW Railroad, which is a branch of the Southern, and this city enjoys trunk line rates to and from all points, and direct quick service to all points north, south, east and west. Five modern well-paved highways radiate in every direction and are util- ized by a large trucking concern located in Lenoir. Vans are run all

over Eastern United States and offer the best in truck transportation. Lenoir is also served by the Greyhound and ET & WNC Bus Lines.
LABOR
The industries of Lenoir are free from labor trouble due to the fact that the laborers are native born, not inclined to float from one section to another and the further fact that they are contented.
Lenoir's labor comes in a good part from the surrounding county. It is an intelligent class, quick to learn. At present there are available 500 men and 1,500 women and girls for work. The wives and daugh- ters of the furniture workers are available as employees for future de- velopment of hosiery, cotton and other textile industries.
TAXES
The tax rate of the City of Lenoir is divided as to property: $1.40 (1940). Valuation is based on an assessment of about 75% of the actual value of the real and personal property.
The county tax rate is set at $1.00 on each $100.00 valuation, based on an assessment of about 75% of the value of the real and personal property.
INSURANCE
Lenoir has a good insurance rate and one of the most modern and best equipped volunteer fire departments in the state. The fire loss in 1939 was only $685.00.
WATER
The water supply of Lenoir is piped by gravity from good, pure, clear mountain streams. The supply is ample for any manufacturing enterprise desiring to locate in this city.
SCHOOLS
Lenoir has three elementary schools and a 12-grade high school and junior high. Two separate schools are provided for the colored population. The Patterson School for Boys is located just outside of Lenoir.
CIVIC CLUBS
Lenoir has a Lions Club, Kiwanis Club, Rotary Club. The Lions Club meets on Monday evening, while the Kiwanis and Rotary Clubs meet on Friday.
CONCLUSION
To the beauty-seeker and sportsman, Lenoir and Caldwell County extend an invitation to hunt, fish, golf, and explore their scenic spots; to the family seeking a residence they offer combination industrial and recreational facilities, combined with good schools and churches; while to the business man interested in commercial undertakings, they hold out a need for hosiery mills, silk mills, canning factories, clothing fac- tories and extend an invitation to assist in the development of indus- tries in a setting marked by close cooperation and loyalty on the part of both employer and employee.
