PREFACE

LENOIR, N. C. . "The Combination City"

PREFACE

LOCATION

The city of Lenoir, situated in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the gateway of the Blowing Rock region, was known as far back as just after the Civil War as a summer resort. Visi- tors to Blowing Rock always remembered Lenoir, for it was from here that they left the train and climbed 3500 feet in twenty-three miles to the top of Blowing Rock. In those days it was a long, hard climb-now with a hard-surfaced road it can be driven in an hour on high.

Manufacturing had not been thought of. Later, however, the Lenoir Furniture Company was formed and from that time indus- trial Lenoir started. In a brief span of time Lenoir has climbed to second place in the state and eighth in the United States in the manufacture of furniture. One of the phenomenal things in con- nection with this, is that all the capital used is "home capital." The Lenoir factories are modern in every respect and are enlarging and expanning constantly. The old saying that success means growth is well illustrated by these plants. Varied types, styles, and kinds of furniture are made, but bedroom and chairs predominate. The payroll is around $2,700,000 a year. Furniture, however, is not the only industry in Lenoir. There are seven cotton mills, a pad factory, a flour mill, a creamery, etc.

With Lenoir as a summer resort, a semi-agricultural market. and industrial center, it truly is a "Combination City."

POPULATION

The population within the corporation limits of Lenoir, accord- ing to the U. S. 1930 census is 6,532. Several large mills are lo- cated just outside the city limits and this increases the population to 28,000 for Caldwell County. Population Greater Lenoir 11,521 (Directory Census) .

TRANSPORTATION

247793

Lenoir is served by the C. & N. W. R. R., which is a branch of the Southern, and this city enjoys trunk line rates to and from all points and direct and quick service to points north, east, south and west. Modern well-paved highways radiate in every direction, which are utilized by a large trucking concern located in Lenoir.

PREFACE

PREFACE (cont'd)

LABOR

The textile and furniture plants are absolutely free from labor strikes. This is due to the fact that the laborers are native born, not inclined to float from one section to another and to the further fact that they are contented. Even in face of wage cuts they are loyal to their employers and do not complain.

Lenoirs' labor comes in a good part from the county surround- ing Lenoir. It is an intelligent class, quick to learn, and turns out the work. At present there are available five hundred men and fifteen hundred women and girls for work. The reason for the large number of women is that Lenoir is a furniture center and the wives and daughters of the furniture workers are above the aver- age cotton mill workers and do not want to work in a cotton mil!, but yet desire work.

TAXES

The tax rate of the City of Lenoir is $1.26 on each $100 (1936) valuation based on an assessment of about 70 per cent of the actual value of the real and personal property.

The county tax rate is 90c on each $100 (1936) valuation based on an assessment of about 70 per cent of the actual value of the real and personal property.

INSURANCE

Lenoir has a good insurance rate and a well-equipped fire de- partment.

WATER

Lenoir is supplied with good pure, clear water which comes from a mountain stream. The supply is ample for any manufacturing enterprise desiring to locate in this section.

SCHOOLS

Lenoir has three elementary schools and "A" grade high school. Separate schools are provided for the colored population.

CIVIC CLUBS

Lenoir has a Lions Club, Kiwanis Club, Rotary Club. The Lions Club meeting on Monday evening, while the Kiwanis and Rotary Clubs meet on Friday.

CONCLUSION

Lenoir is very well adapted for industry and offers many attrac- tive features to prospective manufacturers. This is especially true of furniture and garment or hosiery plants. Cheap but intelligent and satisfied labor, near to raw materials, and yet within easy reach of the markets of the country. We will be very glad to furnish any additional information or, better still, present the facts in person.
