PREFACE

Lenoir, North Carolina

CITY OF LENOIR, COUNTY SEAT OF CALDWELL COUNTY

PREFACE

The City of Lenoir is situated in the western Piedmont section of North Carolina in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and is the southern gateway to the Blue Ridge Parkway, Blowing Rock-Grandfather Mountain area. It is principally an industrial city with the manufacture of furniture its leading industry, being the largest in the entire United States.

Between 1857 and 1900, however, Lenoir was known as a summer resort and had many summer visitors, while all of those who went to Blowing Rock left the train at Lenoir and drove the 23 miles by road up the mountain in horse drawn hacks. The distance is now only 20 miles.

INDUSTRY

It was during this period, however, that the manufacture of furniture first started in Lenoir, since there were many skilled cabinet makers in this area, the descendants of skilled artisans who had been brought over from England by the wealthy plantation owners in Happy Valley and the Yadkin Valley to build the furniture for the homes built in this valley shortly after the Revolution. Several of these beautiful old homes, containing the hand-made furniture, are still standing and in use by the descendants of the families who built them.

By 1900 Lenoir was already well-known as a furniture manufacturing center. This industry has increased steadily until at the present time there are eighteen large furniture manufacturing plants, two veneer plants, two mirror plants, one paper box and packing materials concern, and several other concerns that supply materials for the furniture in- dustry. In all, there are some 50 different industries operated in Lenoir employing more than 9,000 persons. Of these the furniture industry alone employs more than 4,000 persons, a majority of these being men. The payroll for the furniture industry amounts to aproximately $200,000 a week and the total industrial payroll is approximately $450,000 a week. There are also eight cotton spinning mills in Lenoir and the Lenoir area which employs some 2,000 persons, mostly women, also a large plant making work clothing. There are also hosiery mills, machine shops, flour mills, sawmills, millwork plants and other miscellaneous industries.

PREFACE

PREFACE

(Continued from Page 7)

POPULATION

The population of Lenoir was 7,900 within the city limits according to the 1950 census, while the population of Caldwell county in 1950 was 43,329. The popuation of the two townships in which Lenoir is located was 26,090 in 1950. Accordingly, the population of Lenoir and the areas immediately surrounding it is conservatively estimated at approximately 20,106 persons now, while the trading area is approx- imately between 60,000 and 65,000.

The difference between the census population and the population living in and adjacent to Lenoir is due to the fact that many of those employed in the industrial plants live outside the city limits or on small farms out in the country.

TRANSPORTATION

Lenoir is served by the Carolina and Northwestern Railway, a sub- sidiary of the Southern Railway System, extending from Lenoir to Chester, S. C., where it connects with the Seaboard Airline Railway. The C & N W also intersects the main East-West line of the Southern Railway in Hickory, 19 miles south, and the main Washington-Atlanta line of the Southern in Gastonia, some 50 miles south of Lenoir. In addition, Lenoir is served by five hard-surfaced state and federal high- ways which afford frequent bus and freight transportation. Six large trucking concerns operate out of Lenoir either as common carriers or contract haulers. Regular bus service to all points in the United States is provided by the Atlantic Greyhound lines and the Queen City Coach Company. Through rail passenger service to New York, Chicago and all other points is available from Lenoir and Hickory over the Southern Railway System. Piedmont Airlines provides air travel from the Hickory Airport.

TAXES

The tax rate in the city of Lenoir for all purposes is $1.55 for each $100 valuation, for which $1.20 is for city purposes and 35 cents for school purposes. The county tax rate is 90 cents on each $100 valuation for all county purposes. Property is assessed at approximately 75 per cent of its real value for taxation purposes for both the city and county. No state property tax levied in North Carolina.

FIRE PROTECTION

Due to the fact that Lenoir has one of the most modern and well equipped volunteer fire departments in the United States, fire losses have been unusually low with a very low fire insurance rate.

PREFACE

(Continued From Page 9)

WATER SUPPLY

Lenoir has a modern water plant with a pumping capacity of ap- proximately 1,500,000 gallons a day although the city only uses between 800,000 and 1,000,000 gallons a day including industrial uses. This water supply is derived from several mountain streams fed by natural springs with the result that the water is extremely soft and unusually pure.

UTILITIES

The electric power supplied to Lenoir and Caldwell county by the Duke Power Company which with its network of hydro-electric and steam power plants is equipped to deliver an almost unlimited amount of electricity for either domestic or commercial use. Two of Duke Power Company's largest hydro-electric plants are located in Caldwell county while another is located in another county. The rates for power in Lenoir and Caldwell county are among the lowest in the United States.

Caldwell county is one of the most highly electrified counties in North Carolina with 945 miles of rural electric lines with more than 5,000 rural customers.

Gas for cooking, refrigerators and heating is available from the Piedmont Gas Company which is now supplying approximately 21,500,- 000 cubic feet and which has a capacity for about 50,000,000 cubic feet per month. Rates are reasonable and decline in proportion to the amount used. Natural gas will be available in 1953.

BANKS

Lenoir is served by two commercial banks, one industrial bank and two building and loan associations. The two banks have combined resources of more than $12,860,000 while the two building and loan associations have combined resources of aproximately $4,300,000.

LABOR SUPPLY

An adequate supply of native white labor is available in Lenoir and Caldwell county and is more than 99 per cent native Blue Ridge Moun- tain stock of pre-Revolution origin. These people are intelligent, hard working and are not inclined to float from one section to another. Most of them own their homes or farms. Their forefathers have lived in this mountain area for more than a century. This supply of native born white labor with intelligence and ability is the outstanding asset of Lenoir and this entire region.

CIVIC CLUBS

Among the various civic clubs in Lenoir are the Lions Club, Kiwanis Club, Rotary Club, Optimists Club, Exchange Club, Woman's Club,

The schools have a nine. months term and 12 grades. There are 24 rural schools in the county system with an enrollment of approximately 10,500. These schools also have a nine months term and 12 grades. Nearly 7,500 of the children in the rural schools are transported to and from school every day in 60 school buses which travel an average of 1,800 miles every day.

The average annual temperature is 56.5 degrees with an average summer temperature of 73.7 degrees and a fall average temperature of 57.2 degrees. The average winter temperature is 38.9 degrees and the spring temperature is 56.2 degrees.

Although the altitude in Lenoir is only 1,186 feet, within 18 miles it is possible to attain an altitude of almost 4,000 feet, while Grandfather Mountain in the northwestern edge of the county attains an altitude of 5,964 feet.

RECREATION

Those seeking outdoor recreation can find an almost unlimited amount in Lenoir or in this general area. There is a nine-hole Donald Ross golf course in Lenoir, and several hundred miles of extensive trout and bass fishing waters in the county. An 18-hole golf course is available in Blowing Rock at an altitude of almost 4,000 feet.
