PREFACE

LEXINGTON, N. C. Preface

FOUNDED by pioneers in pre-Revolutionary War Days and given the name "Lexington" shortly after the battle of Lexington, Massachusetts, in 1774, the present city of Lexington, North Carolina, was put on the map by act of the N. C. Legislature in 1822 immediately following the separa- tion of Davidson and Rowan Counties. The city is located in the center of Davidson County, of which it is the county seat, in an area noteworthy because of its beautiful farms, the great number of textile, wood-working and hosiery plants and extensive dairying.

LEXINGTON, the county seat of Davidson County, has an elevation of 809.4 feet and an area of 3.7 square miles. Citizens enjoy a climate which is mild, equitable and free from severe storms. The average mean temperature is 62 degrees and the average rainfall is 51 inches. The growing season is approximately 210 days.

THE POPULATION of the city of Lexington, according to the 1940 census was 10,550. The present City Directory population is 15,920 with more than 99% of this number native-born. The estimated popu- lation of Davidson County is 62,280.

THE GOVERNMENT is of the managerial type and is vested in a City Manager, a Mayor and six Councilmen who are progressively ad- ministering the affairs of the city to provide the necessary facilities re- quired for continued growth and prosperity.

UTILITIES, including water, electric power and gas, are provided city residents at low rates. A modern water and sanitary system and light and power system is city-owned, with current for the latter pur- chased from Duke Power Company. The Piedmont Gas Company and the North Carolina Gas Corporation furnish gas service, and REA service, operating from a modern new plant just outside the city limits, provides electric power for rural residents.

TAX RATES for the city are set at $1.40 per hundred with a rate of .85 per hundred for property outside the corporate limits. Evaluation of property in the city in 1948 was over $9,000,000.

BANKING facilities for the city and surrounding trading area are provided through three chartered banks, all members of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. There are also three strong building and loan associations, all of which are members of the Federal Savings and Loan Insurance Corporation.

EDUCATIONAL institutions in the city include five elementary and two high schools, all operating for a full nine months term with the high schools providing twelve grades. Both of the high schools are accredit- ed. During the 1948-49 term there were 103 teachers employed in the city system and a total of 3,217 students enrolled.

INDUSTRIAL plants in the corporate limits include 11 wood-working plants, 3 cotton textile plants, 4 hosiery mills, 1 dairy products plant, 2 shirt factories, 2 manufacturers of overalls and work clothes, 2 lumber plants, 1 cement production business, 4 large construction companies, I mattress factory, 2 flour mills, 2 rayon plants, and two ice and coal
