Out of Sight . Out of Mind Out of Business
The importance of keeping firm and product names in the public eye is recognized by all businessmen. It is astonishing to see how a firm or product, however meritorious, will slip into the limbo of the forgotten if not persistently advertised.
The City Directory is the natural medium for keeping a business or product name in the spotlight. Insist on being well represented in its pages.

PREFACE
LEXINGTON, N. C.
Preface
Population Greater Lexington, 16.772
FOUNDED by pioneers in pre-Revolutionary War Days and given the name "Lexington" shortly after the battle of Lexington, Massachu- setts, in 1774, the present city of Lexington, North Carolina, was put on the map by act of the N. C. Legislature in 1822 immediately following the separation of Davidson and Rowan Counties. The city is located in the center of Davidson County, in an area noteworthy because of its beautiful farms, the great number of textile and work-working plants and extensive dairying.
LEXINGTON, the county seat of Davidson County, has an elevation of 809.4 feet and an area of 5.1 square miles. Citizens enjoy a climate which is mild, equitable and free from severe storms. The average mean temperature is 62 degrees and the average rainfall is 51 inches. The growing season is approximately 210 days.
THE POPULATION of the City of Lexington, according to the 1950 census was 13,562. The present City Directory population is 16,772 with more than 99 per cent of this number native-born. The population of Davidson County is 62,625.
THE GOVERNMENT is of the managerial type and is vested in a City Manager, a Mayor and six Councilmen who are progressively administering the affairs of the city to provide the necessary facilities required for continued growth and prosperity.
UTILITIES, including water, electric power and gas, are provided city residents at low rates. A modern water and sanitary system and light and power system is city-owned, with current for the latter pur- chased from Duke Power Company. The Piedmont Gas Company and the North Carolina Gas Corporation furnish gas service, and REA service, operating from a modern new plant just outside the city limits, provides electric power for rural residents.
TAX RATES for the city are set at $1.40 per hundred. Total real estate evaluation in 1952 was $12,262,673. A basic tax rate of $1.00 per hundred has been established for property outside the corporate limits.
