PREFACE

LEXINGTON, N. C.

Preface

FOUNDED by bioneers in pre-Revolutionary War Days and given the name "Lexington" shortly after the battle of Lexington, Massachus- etts, in 1774, the present city of Lexington, North Carolina, was put on the map by act of the N. C. Legislature in 1822 immediately following the separation of Davidson and Rowan Counties. The city is located in the center of Davidson County, in an area noteworthy because of its beautiful farms, the great number of diversified manufacturing plants and extensive dairying.

LEXINGTON, the county seat of Davidson County, has an elevation of 809.4 feet and an area of 6 square miles. Citizens enjoy a climate which is mild, equitable and free from extremes. The average mean temperature is 62 degrees and the average rainfall is 45 inches. The growing season is approximately 210 days.

THE POPULATION of the City of Lexington, according to the 1960 census was 16,093. The present City Directory population is 19,110. The population of Davidson County is 79,498.

THE GOVERNMENT is of the managerial type and is vested in a City Manager, a Mayor and six Councilmen who are progressively administering the affairs of the city to provide the necessary facilities required for continued growth and prosperity.

UTILITIES, including water, gas and electric power, are provided city residents at low rates. A modern water and sanitary system, light and power system and natural gas distribution system are city-owned. Electric power is purchased from the Duke Power Company which op- erates a huge steam generating plant just across the county line on the Yadkin River. Natural gas is furnished in the area by Trans-Continental Gas Pipeline Corporation which passes through Davidson County about seven miles west of the city. REA service, operating from a modern plant just outside the city limits, provides electric power for rural residents.

TAX RATES for the city are set at $1.00 per hundred. A basic county
