PREFACE
MORGANTON, N. C.
"THE MIMOSA CITY"
PREFACE
LOCATION
Morganton, the County Seat of Burke County, is located in the Cataw- ba River Valley, at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It is 60 miles east of Asheville, on N. C. Highway No. 10 (U. S. No. 70). Seventy-seven miles west of Salisbury, 68 miles northwest of Charlotte, with the cities of Winston-Salem and Greensboro, northeastward 100 miles and 132 miles, respectively, and is 646 miles from New York City by rail.
CLIMATE
With an altitude of 1200 feet above sea level, and enclosed on the north, south, and west by mountains, its climate is regarded as excellent, conducive to health, and having ideal manufacturing conditions. Shel- tered from the extremes of winter by the mountain ranges within twenty miles and tempered by the same mountains in the summer, it has a mean yearly temperature of 58 degrees; spring, 56 degrees; summer, 72 degrees; autumn, 56 degrees; and winter, 42 degrees.
POPULATION
Morganton was established in 1784 and was settled by Scotch-Irish and Pennsylvania Dutch. Population, 1940, 7,776, an increase of 30 per cent over 1930. (Greater Morganton 11,514)
INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT
Morganton is the commercial and industrial center of Burke County. From the standpoint of value of products, industry is predominant. Its industries include: three furniture manufacturing plants; 30 hosiery mills, one fabric mill, a large tannery (branch of the International Shoe Com- pany); one cotton mill; two lumber plants; a machine shop; two flour mills; the National Carbon Company has erected a large plant which is now in operation; and other small industries common to all well devel- oped communities.
The State Hospital for mental patients, as well as the State School for Deaf are located in Morganton. Both of these institutions combined employ approximately five hundred persons.
In the county, three other towns have marked industrial develop- ment. Valdese, a town of approximately 2,300 inhabitants, located eight miles east of Morganton, is next in importance, having several hosiery mills, cotton mills; a box factory, and a large bakery.
Drexel, located five miles northeast of Morganton, has a hosiery mill, and a large furniture manufacturing plant.
Glen Alpine, located seven miles west of Morganton, has a hosiery mill, and a large lumber manufacturing plant.
Other towns in which are located industries include: Icard, with a

cordage mill; Rhodhiss, a cotton mill; Henry River, a cotton mill; and Hildebran, a hosiery mill, and a yarn mill.
ELECTRIC CURRENT
Electricity for domestic and commercial purposes is distributed by the Town of Morganton which owns its own distribution system and pur- chases current at low wholesale rates from the Duke Power Company.
WATER
An ample supply of pure soft water, obtained from nearby mountains, is available at low rates. The Town owns its water plant and distribution system and is prepared to take care of any demand.
TRANSPORTATION
Being located on the Southern Railway's main line from Salisbury to the middle west, excellent transportation facilities are assured with eight passenger and express trains daily, and fourteen regularly schedul- ed freight trains daily, these varying in number with the demand for this service.
Additional transportation facilities are provided by local and through motor freight lines, operating over an excellent system of hard surfaced highways.
GENERAL
Morganton is a modern city, possessing all of the requisites neces- sary to successful business and industrial operations, as well as provid- ing an ideal place to live. Its citizens are friendly, courteous, cultured, and they welcome substantial citizens from other sections.
In addition to Kiwanis, Lions, Rotary, Pilots, and a Woman's Club, Morganton has an active Chamber of Commerce and Merchants Asso- ciation. The Merchants Association operates a credit bureau having a nation wide affiliation.
Morganton's schools are rated as A-l in the Southern Association of secondary schools. It has churches of practically all denominations and other facilities common to all up-to-date modern small cities.
In addition to the industrial development the surrounding back coun- try is agricultural, producing dairy cattle, small grains, poultry and truck crops. Morganton and Burke County are well balanced. Morganton also is potentially a tourist town, this industry not yet being well devel- oped due to the fact that the highways into the mountains have not been thoroughly completed.
Morganton is famous for its beautiful Mimosa trees which line the streets and highways in every direction. Each year, about July Ist, the Mimosa Festival is held, attracting large crowds of visitors.
Morganton has one of the finest golf courses in the State. A Donald Ross course where golf is played the year round.
