- Burke County was created in 1777 from Rowan County.
- Copies of birth and death certificates for 1916 and later can be obtained from the North Carolina Vital Records Office.
- Many of the Burke County courthouse records were lost during the Civil War in 1865.
- The Burke County Register of Deeds has death records starting in 1913, birth records starting in 1913, military discharge records starting in 1865, marriage records starting in 1865, and land records starting in 1865.
- The Burke County Clerk Superior Court has court and probate records starting in 1865.
