ELECTRIC CURRENT

Electricity for domestic and commercial purposes is distributed by the Town of Morganton which owns its own distribution system and purchases current from the Duke Power Company, who has two large hydro-electric plants in Burke County. One located at Lake James and the other at Lake Rhodhiss.

WATER

Morganton has excellent sources of water supply. The city water system has a capacity of 1,500,000 gallons per day from mountain streams. In addition to this the city has a well which is estimated to yield one-half million gallons per day. The water is not filtered and is treated by adding chlorine only.

TRANSPORTATION

Morganton is served by Southern Railroad System, being located on the main line from Salisbury to the middle west. There are six passen- ger trains daily and 32 scheduled freight trains daily, these varying in number with the demand for this service. There is a sixteen hour schedule between Morganton and New York by rail.

Additional transportation facilities are provided by local and through motor freight lines, operating over an excellent system of hard surfaced highways.

GENERAL

Morganton is a modern city, possessing all of the requisites neces- sary to successful business and industrial operations, as well as pro- viding an ideal place to live. Its citizens are courteous, cultured, and friendly. They always welcome substantial citizens from other sections.

Civic Clubs outstanding in Morganton are: Kiwanis, Rotary, Lions, Optimist, Pilots and Woman's Clubs. In addition to these Morganton has an active Chamber of Commerce, a member of the National Cham- ber. Also an active Merchants Association that operates a credit bureau having a nation wide affiliation.

The Morganton city schools possess a grade A North Carolina rating and are on the approved list of the Southern Association of secondary schools. It has churches of all denominations.

In addition to the industrial development the county is agricultural, producing dairy cattle, small grains, poultry and truck crops. Morganton and Burke County are well balanced. Morganton also is a tourist town, this industry gaining much since the war and due to the highways into the mountains being improved.

Morganton is famous for its beautiful Mimosa trees which line the streets and highways in every direction. One of the finest golf courses in the state is the Mimosa Golf Course in Morganton, a Donald Ross course where golf is played the year round.
