PREFACE

MORGANTON, N. C.

A NOBLE PAST - A PROSPEROUS PRESENT AN EXCITING FUTURE

PREFACE

LOCATION

Morganton, the County Seat of Burke County, is located in the Catawba River Valley, at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It is 58 miles east of Asheville on U. S. Highway 64 and 70, Interstate High- way 40, and North Carolina Highways 18, 126 and 181. It is 68 miles northwest of Charlotte, with cities of Winston-Salem and Greensboro, northeastward 100 miles and 132 miles respectively. Morganton is overnight distance by Southern Railway from New York City. It is a 30 minute drive up N. C. scenic highway 181 to the Blue Ridge Park- way.

CLIMATE

With an altitude of 1,193 feet above sea level, and enclosed on the north, south and west by mountains, its climate is regarded as excellent, conducive to health, and having ideal manufacturing conditions. Shel- tered from the extremes of winter by the mountain ranges within 20 miles and tempered by the same mountains in the summer, it has a mean yearly temperature of 58 degrees; spring, 56 degrees; summer, 76 degrees; autumn, 56 degrees; and winter, 43 degrees. Our climate and healthful, peaceful, comfortable living are attracting larger num- bers of retired people to our midst.

ACCOMMODATIONS

Excellent hotel and tourist court accommodations are available along with the best restaurants in this part of the state. We are unusually fortunate in having an outstanding 140 bed hospital with the finest medical personnel; an excellent public library; Recreation Department with a year around program; a community house for civic and public gatherings.

CHURCHES

There are 24 churches for Morganton's population. There are nine different denominations.

RECREATION

A full time recreation program is projected through the Recreation Department. It provides good wholesome entertainment for both young and adults. An Olympic type pool provides the Town with many added attractions, such as swim meets and special swimming pool programs.

PREFACE

PREFACE

(Continued from page 7)

Mimosa Hills Golf Club is famous in this part of the State. It is a very fine 18-hole Donald Ross course. An outstanding fact about the Mimosa Hills Club, it is the Golf Home of Billy Joe Patton, nationally famous amateur golfer.

Lake James provides much recreation throughout the entire year, with boating, fishing, swimming and other sports available. Optimist Park is nearby, with picnic facilities and swimming. Just beyond Op- timist Park is Steel Creek Park, for outings also.

CITY GOVERNMENT

Since 1913 Morganton has had a city manager-council form of gov- ernment. We have modern and quite adequate fire and police de- partments. We maintain a low tax rate in both city and county.

BANKS

Morganton is served by two progressive commercial banking in- stitutions. The First National Bank and the State Bank of Burke. They serve Burke and a part of several surrounding counties who make Mor- ganton their trading center. Both banks are vitally interested in the growth, development and future welfare of the respective territories served. In addition to these two banks Morganton has two Savings & Loan Associations, and a number of other finance companies.

INDUSTRY

In several large factories in Morganton we manufacture fine furni- ture - nationally known lines of Drexel, Henredon, Heritage, Kincaid and Morganton. We are one of the world's largest producers of quality furniture. Two hosiery mills complete thousands of pairs daily. Sky- land Textile Company makes Buster Brown clothing for children; Shadowline produces lovely nylon lingerie for ladies; and one of the most modern plants in the world of its kind is Great Lakes Carbon's Morganton plant. In addition there are other textiles, concrete products, a chemical plant and machine shops. One of the largest poultry pro- cessing plants in the South is Breeden's Poultry Plant in Morganton. Dixie Container Corporation is one of the newest industries to locate here.

SCHOOLS

Our city school system possesses a Grade A North Carolina rating and is on the approved list of Southern Association of Secondary Schools. There are four elementary, a Junior High and two High Schools. Morganton boasts three kindergartens. The County has seven high schools and 14 elementary schools.

AGRICULTURE

We farm rich bottomlands, securing bumper yields of small grain and truck crops. Our dairy and poultry industry is growing rapidly. Another important factor is the State Nursery located in Morganton, making distribution of thousands of seedlings annually.

GENERAL

Two State Institutions have been in operation in Morganton for many years. They are Broughton Hospital for the mentally ill, and the School for the Deaf. The Institutions and the personnel associated with them are fine assets to our community. In 1960 Morganton was chosen as the site for a State Training School for mentally retarded children.

A large number of International Civic Organizations help to carry on Morganton's needs in civic affairs. The Elks and Moose Lodges help to provide entertainment as well as participating in the Town's civic needs.

ER or CONMER

If you would like to know more about Morganton we would be happy to answer your questions. The Chamber of Commerce owns its building at 216 Collett St. or you may phone HE 7-3021.

-thus assuring you the ultimate service that skill and care can produce in the way of City Directories or other reference media and providing protection against fraudulent advertising schemes which operate under the name of Directories.

The following "Standards of Practice," adopted at the inception of the Association of North American Directory Publishers in 1898, and strictly ad- hered to over the years, is your guarantee of satisfactory Directory Service.

The publisher of a Directory should dedicate his best efforts to the cause of business uplift and social service, and to this end pledges himself:

1. To consider, first, the interest of the user of the book.

2. To subscribe to and work for truth, honesty and accuracy in all de- partments.

3. To avoid confusing duplication of listings, endeavoring to classify every concern under the one heading that best describes it, and to treat additional listings as advertising, to be charged for at regular rates.

4. To increase public knowledge of what Directories contain; to study public needs and make Directories to supply them; to revise and standardize methods and classifications, so that what is wanted may be most easily found, and the Directory be made to serve its fullest use as a business and social reference book and directory of buyer and seller.

5. To decline any advertisement which has a tendency to mislead or which does not conform to business integrity.

6. To solicit subscriptions and advertising solely upon the merits of the publications.

7. To avoid misrepresentation by statement or inference regarding cir- culation, placing the test of reference publicity upon its accessibility to seek- ers, rather than on the number of copies sold.

8. To co-operate with approved organizations and individuals engaged in creative advertising work.

9. To avoid unfair competition.

10. To determine what is the highest and largest function of Directories in public service, and then to strive in every legitimate way to promote that function.

$100 Reward will be paid by the Association of North American Directory Publishers for the arrest and conviction of any person or persons engaged in the publishing, collecting or canvassing for any fraudulent or fake directories.
