INTRODUCTION
SHELBY, N. C.
INTRODUCTION
Southern Directory Company, publishers of Miller's Shelby city di- rectory, takes pleasure in presenting the 1941-1942 edition to the general public. A large force of trained enumerators and solicitors worked diligently in the preparation of this directory and we are con- fident that the result is an authentic and useful city directory.
The publishers have worked in cooperation with a special com- mittee of the Shelby Lions Club to the end of building this directory along lines which, in their opinion, would best serve the public.
Confidence in the growth of Shelby, in its wealth, industry and population, as well as in the advancement of its municipal and social activities, will be created as sections of this directory are consulted, for, truly, the directory is a mirror reflecting Shelby to the world.
Your attention is invited to those names appearing in DISPLAY BLACK TYPE throughout the directory as they are the responsible, enterprising, advertising business men who take pride in sustaining the city directory and who have made this publication possible.
POPULATION
The 1941 population of Greater Shelby is 15,593, based on the number of individuals found by actual canvass at each residence. Territory immediately adjacent, which is part of the city, as far as business and social life are concerned, is included in the directory.
FIVE MAJOR DEPARTMENTS
The several essential departments are arranged in the following order.
THE MISCELLANEOUS DIRECTORY, containing valuable informa- tion concerning Local, State and National Governments, Churches, Schools, Colleges, Clubs, etc., included in pages 13 to 16.
THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY, listing telephone sub- scribers by telephone numbers, can be found beginning with page 17.
THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents, business firms, and corporations is included starting on page 101.
THE CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY is included in pages 312 to 327. This department lists the various manufacturing, mercantile and professional interests in alphabetical order under appropriate head- ings. This feature constitutes an invaluable and indispensable epitome of the business interests of the community.

INTRODUCTION (cont'd) (Continued from Page Seven)
THE STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE begins with page 328. In this section the names of the streets and avenues are arranged in alpha- betical order; the residences and business houses are arranged num- erically under the name of each street and avenue, and the names of householders, with the number of occupants, and business concerns are placed opposite the numbers.
MUNICIPAL PUBLICITY
The directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the city, depicting in truthful terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as an industrial site and as an educational center. To broadcast this information over the country, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the directory in Directory Libraries, which are maintained in all the chief cities of the country. Here they are readily available for free public reference and serve as perpetual advertisements of Shelby, for business men the country over realize that the city directory represents the community as it really is.
