PREFACE

SHELBY,

NORTH CAROLINA

Preface

Shelby, near the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, was chartered in 1844. It was named for Col. Isaac Shelby, hero of the Battle of Kings Mountain, fought nearby in the War of the Revolution. All the princi- pal streets are named for Revolutionary war heroes. Its present popula- tion is 15,897.

There are eleven textile plants in Shelby, employing 4,700 workers who receive annual wages of more than $5,000,000. These plants con- sume 50,000 bales of cotton and much synthetic materials. They include thread mills, yarn, cloth, and hosiery.

All the facilities needed for a modern little city are to be found in Shelby. A modern 75-bed hospital, public schools, health department, and a public library of 3,800 volumes. Aldermanic form of government with Mayor and four councilmen. The tax rate, 90 cents, is among the lowest in the state. Municipally owned water and electric systems.

Shelby is served by two railroads, branch lines of Southern and Sea- board. Main line of Southern traverses the County a few miles from Shelby. Buses arrive and leave at all hours. Three motor express lines operate thru the city.

There are many beautiful homes. Shelby is the birthplace and present home of two North Carolina governors. This section has pro- duced many distinguished men and women of national fame.

Recreation is provided by a country club house, nine hole golf course, tennis courts; also large county fairgrounds, horse-back riding, and Athletic Field lighted for night games. There are three hotels with total of 210 rooms. Three banks, three building & loan associations and finance companies have total resources exceeding eleven million dollars.

A pleasant climate. Rich agricultural region and altogether a splen- did community in which to live and earn a living.

INTRODUCTION

THE CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY contains the various names of all manufacturing, mercantile and professional interests, churches, schools, etc., in alphabetical order under appropriate headings.

THE STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE contains a complete directory of streets and avenues arranged in alphabetical order; the residences and business houses are arranged numerically under the name of each street and avenue, and the names of householders, with the number of occu- pants, and business concerns are placed opposite the numbers.

MUNICIPAL PUBLICITY

The directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the city, depicting in truthful terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as an industrial site and as an educational center. To broadcast this information over the country, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the directory in Directory Libraries, which are maintained in all the chief cities of the country. Here they are readily available for free public reference and serve as perpetual advertisements of Shelby, for business men the country over realize that the city directory represents the community as it really is.
