PREFACE
LOCATION
Thomasville, in Davidson County, is located in the center of the Pied- mont, North Carolina's industrial section situated between the mountains and the coastal area. Midway between Washington and Atlanta, Thomasville is served by both the Southern Railway's main line and the locally owned, short-line High Point, Thomasville and Denton Railroad, connecting with the Atlantic Coast Line and Norfolk and Western Rail- roads. Thomasville is the junction between United States Highways Nos. 70 and 29 and State Highways Nos. 109 and 62, with local and inter- state bus service. Eighteen miles away is the Greensboro-High Point airport, and within 20 miles is the Smith Reynolds airport in Winston- Salem, both serviced by the Eastern, Capital and Piedmont Air Lines.
POPULATION
According to the United States Census Bureau, the population of Thomasville in 1860 was 308. By 1900 it had grown to only 750. At the turn of the century the rapid growth and progress of Thomasville began with the advent of the furniture manufacturing industry: By 1910 the population was 3,877. New enterprises, particularly in the textile field, were added, so that by 1920 the city had grown to 5,676; by 1940 to 11,041. Many small enterprises have been started in the past ten years. A conservative estimate of the population today is 14,500. The city limits have not been extended since 1915. At least 2,500 people live in the area immediately surrounding the city's incorporated limits of 3,375 square miles.
Fifteen per cent of the city's population is Negro.
Within a radius of 50 miles more than one million people reside.
CLIMATE
Mean annual temperature is 58 degrees. Seasonal averages are Winter - 42 degrees; Spring - 57 degrees; Summer - 76 degrees; and Fall - 56 degrees. Average annual rainfall is 47.59 inches. Altitude is 857 feet above sea level. Malaria and typhoid fever are practically non- existent.
GOVERNMENT
Thomasville is governed on the council-manager plan. The council is composed of a mayor and five councilmen. The city adopted the council-manager plan in 1915, the third city in North Carolina to employ a city manager. Government offices are centralized in a three-story structure completed in 1938.

PREFACE
(Continued from Page 10
In the field of manufacturing, furniture and hosiery predominate. There are also makers of cotton yarn, wooden boxes, underwear, concrete and cinder blocks, mirrors and mattresses.
Twenty-four furniture companies manufacture a complete line of household furniture, veneers and panels, carvings, and radio and tele- vision cabinets. There are 14 hosiery and hosiery finishing companies. Forty million pairs of hose are produced annually. There are two cotton yarn mills. Total value of manufactured products for 1948 was $36,000,000.
AGRICULTURE
Just as the industry of Thomasville is exceptionaly well balanced, so Davidson County is one of the nation's best balanced counties between industry and agriculture, urban and rural population.
Davidson County ranks at the top in diversification of agricultural products. Its farmers grow tobacco, com, wheat, oats, sweet potatoes, alfalfa, and clovers. Truck farming and raising of beef cattle, hogs and poultry are important. Dairying has become a large scale operation. In 1948 the total value of farm products, (including forestry products) in Davidson County amounted to $6,450,000.
Eighty per cent (80%) of the farms have rural electrication. Davidson County ranks 83rd among the 100 counties of North Carolina in farm tenancy, the percent of farms operated by tenants in 1945 being only 14.6.
