Thomasville, in Davidson County, is located in the center of the Pied- mont, North Carolina's industrial section situated between the mountains and the coastal area. Midway between Washington and Atlanta, Thomasville is served by both the Southern Railway's main line and the locally owned, short-line High Point, Thomasville and Denton Railroad, connecting with the Atlantic Coast Line and Norfolk and Western Rail- roads. Thomasville is the junction between United States Highways Nos. 70 and 29 and State Highways Nos. 109 and 62, with local and inter- state bus service. Eighteen miles away is the Greensboro-High Point airport, and within 20 miles is the Smith Reynolds airport in Winston- Salem, both serviced by the Eastern, Capital and Piedmont Air Lines.

POPULATION

According to the United States Census Bureau, the population of Thomasville in 1860 was 308. By 1900 it had grown to only 750. New enterprises, particularly in the textile field, were added, so that by 1920 the city had grown to 5,676; by 1940 to 11,041, and by 1950 to 11,054. Many small enterprises have been started in the past ten years. The city limits have not been extended since 1915. At least 2,500 people live in the area immediately surruonding the city's incorporated limits of 3,375 square miles.

Fifteen per cent of the city's population is Negro.

Within a radius of 50 miles more than one million people reside.

GOVERNMENT

Thomasville is governed on the council-manager plan. The council is composed of a mayor and five councilmen. INDUSTRY

Industrially, Thomasville is unusually well-balanced and diversified. In the field of manufacturing, furniture and hosiery predominate. There are also makers of cotton yarn, wooden boxes, underwear, concrete and cinder blocks, mirrors and mattresses.

Twenty-four furniture companies manufacture a complete line of household furniture, veneers and panels, carvings, and radio and tele- vision cabinets. There are 14 hosiery and hosiery finishing companies. Forty million pairs of hose are produced annually. There are two cotton yarn mills.

AGRICULTURE

Just as the industry of Thomasville is exceptionaly well balanced, so Davidson County is one of the nation's best balanced counties between industry and agriculture, urban and rural population.

Davidson County ranks at the top in diversification of agricultural products. Its farmers grow tobacco, corn, wheat, oats, sweet potatoes, alfalfa, and clovers. Truck farming and raising of beef cattle, hogs and poultry are important. Dairying has become a large scale operation.
