Thomasville, in Davidson County, is located in the center of the Piedmont, North Carolina's industrial section situated between the mountains and the coastal area. Midway between Washington and At- lanta, Thomasville is served by both the Southern Railway's main line and the locally owned, short-line High Point, Thomasville and Denton Railroad, connecting with the Atlantic Coast Line and Norfolk and West- ern Railroads. Thomasville is the junction between United States High- way Nos. 29 and 70 and State Highways Nos. 109 and 62, with local and interstate bus service. Eighteen miles away is the Greensboro-High- Point airport, and within 20 miles is the Smith Reynolds airport in Wins- ton-Salem, both serviced by the Eastern, Capital and Piedmont Air Lines.
POPULATION
According to the United States Census Bureau, the population of Thomasville in 1860 was 308. By 1900 it had grown to only 750. New enterprises, particularly in the textile field were added, so that by 1920 the city had grown to 5,676; by 1940 to 11,041 and by 1950 to 11,154. Many small enterprises have been started in the past ten years. The city limits have not been extended since 1915. At least 5,000 people live in the area immediately surround- ing the city's incorporated limit of 3.375 square miles.
Fifteen percent of the city's population is Negro.
Within a radius of 50 miles more than one million people reside.
