Preface - Thomasville, N. C.

The history of Thomasville, which is situated in the heart of the Piedmont District of North Carolina, epitomizes the re- markable growth and development of that section during the past quarter of a century. The town was founded in 1852 by Senator John W. Thomas, whose house still stands in the center of the business district. Five years later it was incorporated, and short- ly afterward the North Carolina Railroad was built. When the great main line of the Southern Railway was laid from Washing- ton to Atlanta, the North Carolina Railway was leased as a part of the system; and so Thomasville is situated on the main line of this great double track, also exactly half way between Wash- ington and Atlanta and within easy access to New York and New. Orleans, also on the High Point, Thomasville & Denton R. R., which connects with the Atlantic Coast Line R. R.

For the first half century of its existence Thomasville was the typical sleepy, unprogressive town of the unawakened South. The Civil War left it desolute and poverty-stricken, like most of the State, and at the close of the nineteenth century, it was a village of 750 people, with one small industrial plant, no public school and three small frame churches.

With the dawn of the twentieth century, the town awoke and made such rapid strides along every line that its development has been nothing less than amazing. Within the first decade of the century the population increased from 750 to 3,877, and in 1920 it had grown to 5,676. An unofficial census in 1927 showed a population of more than 10,000. The wealth of the Town has grown in proportion to the population. Thomasville's property valuation is $15,000,000, and its assessed valuation $7,528,000; while its gross debt, including all bonds, is $1,436,000 and the net debt $406,857.04.

Instead of the lone factory to be found in Thomasville thirty years ago, there are many and varied industries now. Thomas- ville is especially proud of her seven chair factories, which make

chairs enough to furnish a new one each day to every man, wo- man and child in town. The town boasts of possessing the World's Biggest Chair-a monster seat, thirteen feet high, which was erected on the Town Commons as a symbol of the leading industry.

But although Thomasville is best known for maufacturing chairs, they are by no means the only thing made. There are two furniture plants, which manufacture bed-room and dining- room suites, two cotton mills, three knitting mills, a finishing plant, four veneer plants, a mattress factory, two panel factories, one box and shook factory, one packing pad factory, one excelsior plant, one concrete products plant, one roller mill, one machine shop, and an ice and bottling plant, with total payrolls of $70,- 000 per week.

In addition to being a busy place industrially, Thomasvilie is a pleasant and comfortable place in which to live. The town has a complete water and sewer system and thirteen miles of paved streets. The government is run smoothly and efficiently on the City Manager plan. There are Rotary and Civitan Clubs, a weekly newspaper, chapters of fraternal orders and an active Woman's Club. The public schools have an enrollment of 1,984 and are modern and well equipped. There are churches repre- senting six denominations: Methodist, Baptist, Presbyterian, Heidelburg Reformed, Lutheran, Methodist Protestant, and Holi- ness. The Thomasville Shooting Club is an organization com- posed chiefly of northern capitalists who come down to hunt the game to be found upon the surrounding hillsides.

One fact of which the town is proud is that within its bor- ders is the best loved institution of one of the leading denomina- tions of the State-The Thomasville Baptist Orphanage. This is the second largest orphanage in the South, and its personnel and life are closely connected with those of the town.

The busy industrial life of Thomasville, its social and civic advantages and its location on State Highway No. 10 and the main line of the Southern Railway in one of the most beautiful and healthful sections of the South, enable the town to offer many inducements to the investor and the home-seeker.
