PREFACE
Valdese, North Carolina
"North Carolina's Friendly Town"
PREFACE
LOCATION
Valdese is located six miles East of Morganton, about 14 miles west of Hickory on U. S. Highway 70. Lake Rhodhiss and th Catawba River are about two miles north and northeast of the Town. The South Mountain range is about two miles south.
The Town of Valdese was settled by the Waldensians from the Cottial Alps May 29, 1893. The first settlers were six families, and later fifty other families followed. They came to Valdese to escape religious persecution and economic conditions in their home land.
CLIMATE
With an altitude of 1,250 feet above sea level, Valdese has a chain of mountains north and northwest known as the Blue Ridge Mountain chain with notable spots such as Grandfather Mountain, and Mt. Mitchell. On the South the South Mountain chain with High Peak is the highest point in this chain. Valdese nestled in the Catawba River Valley is sheltered and has an excellent climate conducive to good health and ideal manufacturing conditions.
POPULATION
The Town of Valdese was incorporated April 9, 1920 and has a population of 2,735 (1950 census). The approximate population at present is 3,200.
INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT
Valdese is an industrial town and has the Home of Sunbeam Bread, Waldensian Bakeries, Inc. It is the home of Alba Hose for ladies which are shipped to all points in the U.S.A., of Waldensian Hosiery Mills, makers of fine men's sox, and of Valdese Mfg. Co., a manufacturer of fine hosiery yarns and other yarns used in the textile trade. We also have Burkyarns, Inc. who are processors of yarns for the textile trade. We have many other hosiery plants namely Martinat Hosiery Mills, Francis-Louise Mills, Dolly Hosiery Mills (infants and children) and also one ladies sweater plant, a subsidiary of Alba Hosiery Mills, known as Pons Full-Fashioned Mills, Inc. There is also one furniture plant, Crestline Furniture Co., makers of Early American, hand-crafted upholstered furniture.

ELECTRIC CURRENT
Electricity for domestic and commercial purposes is distributed by the Duke Power Company, which has two large hydro-electric plants in Burke County. One plant is located at Lake James and the other at Lake Rhodhiss.
WATER
The Town of Valdese is fortunate in having two water filter plants. One plant is located on the Catawba River and has a daily capacity of 2,000,000 gallons. The other plant is located east of the Town on Micol's Creek and has a capacity of 1,000,000 gallons per day. All the water is chemically treated and filtered, and each month is sent to the State Laboratory of Hygiene for analysis.
TRANSPORTATION
Valdese is served by the Southern Railway System, being located on the main line from Salisbury to Asheville and from there to other parts of the nation. The Town is served with a number of motor freight lines. Transportation by air is available at Hickory, N. C. and at Char- lotte, N. C.
GENERAL
The people of Valdese have inherited and fostered a strong sense of spiritual, civic and cultural values. Evidence to this effect is indicated by a steady growth in each of these fields. There are eight churches in Valdese and the following clubs are active in the community and enjoy large memberships: Lions Club, Rotary Club, Junior Chamber of Commerce; Pilot Club, Lovelady Lodge 670, A. F. & A. M .; Eastern Star; Daughters of the American Revolution; Junior Order; Daughters of America; Valdese Music Club, Czerny Music Club; and Music Lovers Club.
The two service clubs and their auxiliaries, American Legion Post 234 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5468, have unusually large memberships for the size of the community.
The Masons have a new Masonic Temple, and the Pilot Club re- cently completed its own club house.

INTRODUCTION
Valdese, North Carolina
INTRODUCTION
Southern Directory Company, publishers of the Valdese city direc- tory, takes pleasure in presenting the 1960-1961 edition to the gen- eral public. The work embodies all available and vital data relating to the civic, commercial, financial, social and industrial interests and activities of the municipality, and the publishers add their assurance that the work is complete in all its parts.
The publishers enjoy the prestige and advantage of a complete organization and thorough system essential in the production of direc- tories and the additional advantage of having the courteous co-operation of citizens in furnishing information. These factors, added to the liberal support of patrons as shown by the advertisements displayed upon the printed page, were vital to the success of the publication.
Confidence in the growth of Valdese, in its wealth, industry and population, as well as in the advancement of its municipal and social activities will be created as sections of this directory are consulted, for truly, the directory is a mirror reflecting Valdese to the world.
Your attention is invited to those names appearing in DISPLAY BLACK TYPE throughout the directory, as they are the responsible enterprising, advertising business men who take pride in sustaining the city directory and who have made this publication possible.
POPULATION
The 1960 population of Greater Valdese is 3,200, based on the number of individuals found by actual canvass at each residence. Territory immediately adjacent, which is part of the city, as far as business and social life are concerned, is included in the directory.
FIVE MAJOR DEPARTMENTS
The several essential departments are arranged in the following order. THE MISCELLANEOUS DIRECTORY, containing valuable informa- tion concerning State and National Governments.
THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY, listing telephone sub- scribers by telephone numbers, can be found beginning with page 25.
THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES contains data concerning each individual, firm and corporation within the city. The wife's name is given in parenthesis and is followed by position, place of employ- ment and resident address.
THE CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY contains the various names of all manufacturing, mercantile and professional interests in alphabetical order under appropriate headings. This feature constitutes an invaluable and indispensable epitome of the business interests of the community.
(Continued on page 10)

INTRODUCTION
(Continued from page 9)
THE STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE contains a complete directory of streets and avenues arranged in alphabetical order; the residences and business houses are arranged numerically under the name of each street and avenue, and the names of householders, with the number of occupants, and business concerns are placed opposite the numbers.
MUNICIPAL PUBLICITY
The directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the city, depicting in truthful terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as an industrial site and as an educational center. To broadcast this information over the country, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the directory in Directory Libraries, which are maintained in all the chief cities of the country. Here they are readily available for free public reference and serve as perpetual advertisements of Valdese, for business men and the country over realize that the city directory represents the community as it really is.
The modern City Directory is a business institution. It occupies a place peculiarly its own. It is necessary to the progress and develop- ment of a city. The advertising in this Directory is suggestive of the stabiilty and permanency of the advertisers. You like to patronize those concerns who are in business to stay because such business establish- ments stand back of the wares they sell; it is a noteworthy fact that concerns which advertise one year in the City Directory are there again next year. Directory advertising is profitable.
