Preface - Thomasville, N. C.
The history of Thomasville, which is situated in the heart of the Piedmont District of North Carolina, epitomizes the re- markable growth and development of that section during the past quarter of a century. The town was founded in 1852 by Senator John W. Thomas, whose house still stands in the center of the business district. Five years later it was incorporated, and short- ly afterward the North Carolina Railroad was built. When the great main line of the Southern Railway was laid from Washing- ton to Atlanta, the North Carolina Railway was leased as a part of the system; and so Thomasville is situated on the main line of this great double track, also exactly half way between Wash- ington and Atlanta and within easy access to New York and New Orleans; also on the High Point, Thomasville & Denton Railroad, which connects with the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad.
For the first half century of its existence Thomasville was the typical sleepy, unprogressive town of the unawakened South. The Civil War left it desolute and poverty-stricken, like most of the State, and at the close of the Nineteenth Century, it was a village of 750 people, with one small industrial plant, no public schools and three small frame churches.
With the dawn of the Twentieth Century, the town awoke and made such rapid strides along every line that its development has been nothing less than amazing. Within the first decade of the century the population increased from 750 to 3,877, and in 1920 it had grown to 5,676. The U. S. census in 1930 showed a popu- lation of 10,090. The wealth of the town has grown in proportion to the population. Thomasville's property valuation is $15,000,- 000, and its assessed valuation is $7,528,000; while its gross debt, including all bonds, is $1,436,000, and the net debt is $406,857.04.
Instead of the lone factory to be found in Thomasville thirty years ago, there are many and varied industries now. Thomas- ville is especially proud of her seven chair factories, which make chairs enough to furnish a new one each day to every man, wo- man and child in town. The town boasts of possessing the World's Biggest Chair-a monster seat, thirteen feet high, which was erected on the Town Commons as a symbol of the leading in- dustry.
But although Thomasville is best known for manufacturing chairs, they are by no means the only thing made. There are
