PREFACE.
TN presenting our 1904 volume of the Winston-Salem Directory, we desire to call the attention of our patrons and the citizens in general to the fact that every promise made by us has been fulfilled and more.
In the present volume we have made several radical changes, such as the division of the white and colored names and printing each department on a different tinted paper, thus enabling the directory user to ascertain the information desired with much more rapidity.
As in the past, every useful feature known in directory preparation is used, and in this connection we invite the citizens to compare the Winston- Salem work with any directory published, no matter where published.
In its preparation only expert directory compilers were used-men who spend every day of their lives in just such work.
In the general departments where the names are shown, whether a citizen of Winston-Salem, Centerville, Southside, Waughtown, etc., the names are shown in proper alphabetical order; and following every name in the Directory we show the address, giving street and number, and if in Win -- ston, show by initial letter (W); for Salem, (S); for Centerville, (C); for Southside, (SS), and Waughtown, (W T).
In conclusion, we desire to extend our thanks for the many courtesies shown the representatives of this work during its preparation; and to those who by their support made the publication possible, with assurance that we will continue to give the best service possible and improve each suc- ceeding volume over its predecessor, we are, respectfully,
THE W. H. WALSH DIRECTORY COMPANY,
