It is a well known fact that cotton, or any other crop, produced with Vir- ginia-Carolina Fertilizers will bring the highest possible price on the market. Make healthy, strong, well-developed, early cotton, with full grown bolls on the fruit limbs at the base as well as all the way up to the very top and tip ends of the branches of the cotton plants, by liberally using

Virginia=Carolina Fertilizers.

This is one of the several ways to increase your yields.

They contain all the materials necessary to supply to your land the ele- ments which have been taken from it by repeated cultivation year after year. These fertilizers will greatly "increase your yields per acre," for they are mixed by capable men who have been making high-grade fertilizers all their lives. They contain materials in the right proportions to return to your soil the plant-foods that it needs. Accept no substitute from your dealer.

PREFACE.

22,862

CENSUS 22,862

N presenting our 1906 volume of the Winston-Salem Directory, we take pleasure in stating that Winston-Salem has made remarkable strides both in population and general improvement since the publication of the last Directory in 1904.

The census as shown above is for Winston-Salem and suburbs (the territory em- braced in this volume) and will be found as accurate as man can make such returns, the figures are not an estimate, but are an actual count, taken by men who spend every day of their lives in just such work, and each and every one connected made sworn statement as to the correctness of their work.

This volume is divided into five departments, viz .:

First is Appendix showing churches, schools, secret and benevolent societies, in- corporated companies, State, County and City Governments, etc.

Second is the Street Department showing streets and avenues in alphabetical order regardless of their location, showing number of each house and name of occupant.

Third is White Department showing the names of white population, name of wife, if married, occupation and residence address.

Fourth is Colored Department, which is the same as the White Department.

Fifth is the Business Department showing the Business and professions under cor- rect classification in alphabetical order.

As in the past, every useful feature known in directory preparation is used, and in this connection we invite the citizens to compare the Winston-Salem work with any directory published, no matter where.

In its preparation only expert directory compilers were used.

In the general departments where the names are shown, whether a citizen of Winston- Salem, Centerville, Southside, Waughtown, etc., the names are shown in proper alphabetical order; and following every name in the Directory we show the address, giving street and number, and if in Winston, show by initial letter (W); for Salem, (S); for Centerville, (C); for Southside, (S S). and Waughtown, (W T).

In conclusion, we desire to extend our thanks for the many courtesies shown the representatives of this work during its preparation; and to those who by their support made the publication possible, with assurance that we will continue to give the best service possible and improve each succeeding volume over its predecessor, we are, respectfully,

THE WALSH DIRECTORY COMPANY,
