"UNION BRANDS" OF FERTILIZERS have won an enviable reputation as "CROP PRODUCERS," based on . many years of experience. These brands have "made good" and are being used exclusively by many of the largest and most successful planters of Virginia and the Carolinas.

It will pay you to investigate the merits of these brands. Assure yourself of a "bumper" wheat crop by a liberal application of our wheat fertilizers. For drilling, these goods will be found superior to any others. We have the largest assortment of grain fertilizers on the market.

PREFACE

28,095

CENSUS 28,095

1 N PRESENTING our 1908 volume of the Winston-Salem Directory, we take pleasure in stating that Winston-Salem has made remarkable strides both in poulation and general improvement since the publication of the last Directory in 1906.

The census as shown above is for Winston-Salem and suburbs (the territory embraced in this volume). there being 9,365 names shown in the white and colored general departments, which multiplied by three makes the total 28.095, which is a growth of 5,233 for the years, which in itself is proof of Winston- Salem's progress.

This volume is divided into five departments, viz .:

First is Appendix showing churches, schools, seeret and benevolent societies, incorporated companies, State, County and City Governments, etc.

Second is the Street Department showing streets and avenues in alphabetical order, regardless of their location, showing number of each house and name of ocenpant

Third is White Department showing the names of white population, name of wife if married, occupation and residence address.

Fourth is Colored Department, which is the same as the White Department.

Fifth is the Business Department showing the Business and professions under correct classification in alphabetical order.

As in the past, every useful feature known in directory preparation is used, and in this connection we invite the citizens to compare the Winston-Salem work with any directory published, no matter where.

In its preparation only expert directory compilers were used.

In the general departments where the names are shown, whether a citizen of Winston-Salem, Centerville, Southside, Waughtown, etc., the names are shown in proper alphabetical order; and following every name in the Directory we show the address, giving street and number, and if in Winston, show by initial letter (W); for Salem. (S); for Centerville. (C); for Southside, (SS), and Waughtown, (W T).

In conclusion, we desire to extend our thanks for the many courtesies shown the representatives of this work during its preparation; and to those who by their support made the publication possible, with assurance that we will con- time to give the best service possible, we are. respectfully,

THE WALSH DIRECTORY COMPANY,

Winston-Salem, N. C., May 15, 1908.
