It is one of the new public schools in the nation and has both a national and international reputation for teaching and for research. It trains doctors, nurses, sanitarians, and other technicians and special health educators. There is departmental instruction in biostatistics, epidemi- ology, experimental medicine, public health administration and education, maternal and child health, mental health, public health nursing, nutrition, parasitology, and sanitary engineering.

Pharmacy

The Pharmacy School was established late in the 19th Century because of the urgent demand of pharmacists in the state, and the demands for more and more pharmacists continues past the mid-twentieth century. The American Council on Pharmaceutical Educationaccredits the school Class A.

Dentistry

The School of Dentistry operates a superior program of training for dentists, dental technicians, and dental hygienists. Besides producing students, the school conducts post- graduate courses for dentists through- out North Carolina. It is a Class A School, so accredited by the Ameri- can Dental Association.

Education

Closely connected with the public school system of the state is the School of Education which trains those men and women who wish to follow elementary and high school teaching as a career.

The school is recognized for the high quality of its work in preparing teachers for jobs and for its success in placing students in higher positions in the schools and for special courses, in the summer and in regular semesters, which benefit teachers working for higher degrees and cer- tificate credits.

Communications

A prominent new feature of higher education is the use of television, together with radio and motion pictures, all three utilized with conjoined efficiency in the Department of Radio, Television, and Motion Pictures, a part of the UNC Communications Center.

All aspects of broadcasting and film production are taught-including announcing, acting, script writing, visual aids, production, commercial phases of the communications and operation of equipment.

Allied with the department is WUNC-TV, an educational television station broadcasting on Channel 4, and a frequency modulation radio station, WUNC.

Journalism

The School of Journalism seeks to give more than practical training to those wanting to become newspapermen. The school also has high standards and insists upon thorough arts and sciences training as a preliminary to training in journalism. The school trains both graduates and undergraduates, and many newspapermen of national standing are among the alumni of UNC's School of Journalism.

Graduate School

Granting that much of the rank of a university rests upon the quality of its teaching on the graduate level as well as for undergraduates and also assuming that respect for an achievement of basic and applied research is one of the hallmarks of a distinction of a university, the Uni- versity of North Carolina has offered advanced courses beyond the under- graduate level. Degrees under the supervision of the graduate faculty are the Mastr of Arts (A.M.), Master of Science (S.M.) and Doctor of Philosophy.

Masters degrees are offered in 42 fields. The Ph.D. degree is offered in 27 fields.

Social Work

The School of Social Work has developed from an earlier School of Public Welfare in accordance with a University policy of meeting the varying needs of the state and Southern region. It is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education, and its program for the training of Psychiatric Social Workers is approved by the American Association of Psychiatric Social Workers.

Institute of Government

The Institute of Government is a unique grassroots program of in- struction and guidance for officials in North Carolina charged with responsibility for county, city and state government.

Officials of county court houses, city halls, the state capitol and other centers of government come to Chapel Hill for special conferences and clinics taught by trained instructors.

Besides bringing court judges, tax collectors, registers of deeds, jailers, sheriffs, and the like to Chapel Hill for specialized instruction, the Institute of Government also conducts special surveys in all parts of

INTRODUCTION

the state for localgovernmental improvement. The Institute bridges the gap between the way law is taught in the classroom and the way it is practiced in the court houses, combining theory with practicality with a harmonious design.

Institute for Research in Social Science

The Institute for Research in Social Science performs a vital service for state and nation in finding facts that are useful for society. This is performed by channeling the tremendous educational resources of the University into practical outlets-in service to the state and federal governments, to separate governmental organizations in the state, to non-profit foundations and agencies.

Extension

Besides instruction of students enrolled in the University there are thousands of other students who take correspondence courses or enroll in special short courses, clinics and institutes. The advantages of the University in teaching and in other ways are made available to the people of the state and region by the University Extension Division.

These services utilize educational television and radio, classes in various parts of the state, lectures, library service, adult education programs, audio-visual education, high school interscholastic activities, the fine arts and publications.

Library Science

The School of Library Science trains graduate students in the profes- sion of librarian. The school has high standards and is a reservoir of talent for libraries in public libraries of the state, in public schools and in college and university libraries over the country.

The School is accredited by the American Library Association.

Playmakers

The Carolina Playmakers are distinguished for their development of folk drama, training both playwrights and actors and fostering the growth of outdoor dramas which has gained international recognition in the world of dramatics. What the little theatre is to a community, the Carolina Playmakers have become in North Carolina and the region. The national attainment of some of its alumni testify to the worth and ferment of the Playmakers who are so integrally a part of the Department of Dramatic Arts.

Library

The University Library is unquestionably the heart of the University's life. It is truly one of the distinguished libraries of the region and contains many fine collections, majoring in the Southern Historical Collection and a collection of North Carolina historical and other volumes. The main library collections are housed in the Louis Round Wilson Library building, a magnificent structure which is a center of campus activity for both students and faculty.

UNC Press

The University of North Carolina Press has published books and periodicals of interest since 1922. The Press issues a large number of volumes annually. It is a member of the American Association of Uni- versity Presses.

Among the showplaces of Chapel Hill is the Morehead Planetarium which is a gift of John Motley Morehead. The Zeiss Planetarium was

made in Germany. It is one of only seven in the United States and the only one in the world that is located on a university or college campus. Nearly a million people, many of them school children, have attended demonstrations in the Planetarium and learned the significant lessons of man's world and God's universe.

The following "Standards of Practice," adopted at the inception of the Association of North American Directory Publishers in 1898, and strictly ad- hered to over the years, is your guarantee of satisfactory Directory Service.

The publisher of a Directory should dedicate his best efforts to the cause of business uplift and social service, and to this end pledges himself:

1. To consider, first, the interest of the user of the book.

2. To subscribe to and work for truth, honesty and accuracy in all departments.

3. To avoid confusing duplication of listings, endeavoring to classify every concern under the one head- ing that best describes it, and to treat additional listings as advertis- ing, to be charged for at regular rates.

4. To increase public knowledge of what Directories contain; to study public needs and make Direc- tories to supply them; to revise and standardize methods and classifica- tions, so that what is wanted may be most easily found, and the Direc- tory be made to serve its fullest use

as a business and social reference book and director of buyer and seller.

5. To decline any advertisement which has a tendency to mislead or which does not conform to business integrity.

6. To solicit subscriptions and ad- vertising solely upon the merits of the publications.

7. To avoid misrepresentation by statement or inference regarding circulation, placing the test of refer- ence publicity upon its accessibility to seekers, rather than on the num- ber of copies sold.

8. To co-operate with approved organization and individuals en- gaged in creative advertising work.

9. To avoid unfair competition.

10. To determine what is the highest and largest function of Directories in public service, and then to strive in every legitimate way to promote that function.

$100 Rewsrd will be paid by the Association of North American Directory Publishers for the arrest and conviction of sny person or persons engaged In the publishing, collecting or canvassing for sny fraudulent or iske directories.

The importance of keeping firm and product names in the public eye is recognized by all business men. It is astonishing to see how a firm or product, however meritorious, will slip into the limbo of the forgotten if not persistently advertised.

The City Directory is the natural medium for keep- ing a business or product name in the spotlight. Insist on being well represented in its pages.
