SAMPSON COUNTY
Sampson County, named in honor of Colonel John Samp- son, was formed in 1784. The first settlers, predominantly 'Scotch and Irish, began to arrive in the area now known as Sampson County about the middle of the eighteenth century.
The present population consists mainly of descendants of the pioneers and of those who came later. The proportion of Negroes is quite large, and small colonies of Indians live on South River and in Herring Township.
Sampson County is in the southeastern part of North Carolina. The topography is gently rolling, although many flat areas occur. The elevation above sea level ranges from about 65 feet to 200 feet. The mean annual temperature is 61.7 degrees, and the annual growing season is 222 days, average yearly rainfall is 47.15 inches.
Clinton, the county seat, is the oldest town. It was incorpor- ated in 1852. Other towns in the order of their incorporation are: Roseboro, Autryville, Salemburg, Garland, Turkey, Par- kersburg, Newton Grove and Harrells.
Sampson County's most noted sons were William Rufus King, elected Vice-President of the United States in 1852, and Gabriel Holmes, governor of North Carolina from 1821 to 1824. A monument to Rufus King stands on the court house square. Historical markers on U. S. Highway 701, point to the birth- places of Vice-President Rufus King and Governor Gabriel Holmes.
'Sampson County is the largest county in the state and was created in 1784 by Act of Assembly dividing Duplin County. Divisions of New Hanover in 1795, 1847, 1870 and 1872, annex- ing various parts of the county to Sampson, account in part for its present size.
Sampson is served by two branches of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad. Three major bus lines provide highway trans- portation to all portions of the county. The Carolina Power and Light Company provides electricity for its own distribu- tion line. The Carolina Telephone & Telegraph Company has exchanges at Clinton, Roseboro, Garland and Newton Grove. The Star Telephone Membership Corporation has automatic dial exchanges in four rural communities.
The Clinton Airport is operated by R. A. Naylor, owner of the Clinton Flying Service. Planes are available for charter trips, or for instruction.
