LIBRARY-The Norris Public Library on South Main Street of Rutherfordton began as a subscription library in 1922. The present attractive building was erected in 1933. It contains 27,478 volumes, and carries is services into remote areas of the county by "bookmobile".
18,136 volumes are borrowed each year by the residents of Rutherfordton. Staffed with competent and experienced per- sonnel, the library is an integral part of the life of the com- munity.
POWER-Duke Power Company serves Rutherfordton with electric power. The company is one of the nation's ten largest utilities. A huge steam plant at nearby Cliffside, plus the interconnection's of the Duke system, assures an ample, de- pendale supply of power for all purposes.
RECREATION-Rutherfordton offers unequaled recreation only 20 minutes away in Lake Lure, one of the most beautiful lakes in the Southern Highlands, where fishing, boating and water sports are enjoyed. Rutherfordton has an attractive com- munity house, and city operated, well-kept golf course, tennis courts and swimming pool. Tryon, a favorite winter resort, is only 22 miles away.
COMMUNICATION-A dial telephone system is operated by the Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Company. There is a Western Union office and an energetic weekly newspaper. A radio station is being planned. Toll-free telephone service is maintained between every community in the county.
EDUCATION-Rutherfordton has more than 90 competent, well-trained teachers in the local school district. Central High School, enrollment 650, is accredited by State of North Caro-

lina and the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. The three elementary schools meet the standard re- quirements of the State Board of Education.
Administered by an elected County Board of Education and an appointed Local Board of Trustees, (District No. 1, Ruther- fordton) the Rutherfordton School officials are planning new schools, as well as the remodeling of present schools.
HEALTH-Rutherford Hospital is a modern, newly re- modeled institution. There are twelve resident physicians. It has 129 beds, an attractive, comfortable nurses' home and an approved school of nursing.
The hospital has been recognized as one of the 10 best managed hospitals in North Carolina. It was one of the first North Carolina hospitals to win accreditation by the American Medical Association.
The Rutherford-Polk District Health Department, serving Rutherford and Polk counties, makes its headquarters in Ruth- erfordton. It is one of the state's outstanding health offices, being noted principally for the Cancer Detection Center which operates in close cooperation with the Cancer Diagnostic Clinic of Rutherford Hospital.
SERVICES-The police and fire departments are on 24 hour duty protecting lives and property. Patrol cars equipped with two-way radios and tied in with Sheriff's, highway de- partment, and other community police in the area, provide con- stant protection. The fire department has two trucks, including a new one equipped with the latest "fog" nozzles and carrying a large quantity of water.

TRANSPORTATION-Located on both the Southern Rail- way and the Seaboard Railroad lines, the area has ample rail communications. Three national highways (U.S. 64, U.S. 74, U.S. 221) and a state highway (N.C. 108) assure fast connec- tions with the metropolitan areas of both Carolinas. Fourteen motor freight lines and two bus lines provide daily service.

WATER SUPPLY-Water service, too, is furnished by Duke Power Company. Rutherfordton is served by a filter plant rated at 2,000,000 gallons per day. The consumption per month has averaged 48,000,000 gallons. Plans are underway to in- crease the filter plant capacity to 3,000,000 gallons per day, and provide a raw water storage of 150,000,000 gallons.
