Delightfully Different Beaufort

The county seat of Carteret County is Beaufort, named for the Earl of Beaufort at its incorporation in 1723. Founded in part by French Hugenots and sturdy English sailors, Beaufort looks to the sea for its entertainment and its livelihood. Sur- rounded on three sides by water, this third oldest town in North Carolina (there'll be a big celebration in 1960, marking 250 years of growth) faces a limitless horizon. Walk along Beaufort's Front street (the gulls will be wheeling majestical- ly overhead) and you will have a view across Beaufort inlet of Fort Macon, built in 1832. Look beyond Beaufort Inlet, and there is the Atlantic ocean. Stroll further down Front street and you will see homes of unexcelled beauty dating back to the late 1700's still lived in and cherished by their owners.

Beaufort is the hub of Carteret County activity. The pro- ductive tobacco farmers from the western part of the county also use Beaufort as their trading center.

In the center of Beaufort, facing Ann street, is the Histori- cal Cemetery, resting place of North Carolinians or renown. Here lies Otway Burns, under a cannon from his privateer, "Snapdragon," which harassed the British in the war of 1812. Here, too, is the grave of an unknown English seaman, who asked to be buried standing straight up- and he is! Tomb- stones in the Cemetery mark the passage of time since 1775. Stroll through this quiet, landscaped place and feel that you're surrounded by history.

Beaufort is the gate-way to a world which is timeless-The 'undiscovered "Down East!"

With all this we guarantee you'll come to Beaufort year after year, and find it unchanging in friendliness and beauty.

ATLANTIC BEACH

Atlantic Beach, an incorporated town, is just across the bridge from Morehead City. This is the most developed spot on the twenty-two miles of matchless, east-west, beach on Bogue Banks. Even though this is one of the safest beaches on the coast ample and efficient lifeguard service is provided. The Marina's, launching ramps, bowling, pool, miniature golf, kiddie rides and just about every kind of amusements line the boardwalk as it approaches. Hotel, motels, lodges, restaurants and snack bars are convenient to the beach and the causeway. Five ocean fishing piers near the east end of the beach make fishing most convenient. On the Causeway there are two fish- ing piers which extend out over Bogu Sound for those who prefer fishing in the calmer waters. The beaches on the sound offer still water sports to the children, skiing to those who like the thrill and boating or sailing to all who like the water.

Out Of Sight! Out Of Mind! Out of Business

The importance of keeping firm and product names in the public eye is recognized by all business men. It is astonishing to see how a firm or product, how- ever meritorious, will slip into the limbo of the fer- gotten if not persistently advertised.

The City Directory is the natural medium for keeping a business or product name in the spotlight. Insist on being well ropre- sented in its pages.

-thus assuring you the ultimate service that skill and care can produce in the way of City Directories or other reference media, and providing pro- tection against fraudulent advertising schemes which operate under the name of Directories.

The following "Standards of Practice," adopted at the inception of the Association of North American Directory Publishers in 1898, and strictly ad- hered to over the years, is your guarantee of satisfactory Directory Service.

The publisher of a Directory should dedicate his best efforts to the cause of business uplift and social service, and to this end pledges himself:

1. To consider, first, the interest of the user of the book.

2. To subscribe to and work for truth, honesty and accuracy in all departments.

3. To avoid confusing duplication of listings, endeavoring to classify every concern under the one head- ing that best describes it, and to treat additional listings as advertis- ing, to be charged for at regular rates.

4. To increase public knowledge of what Directories contain; to study public needs and make Direc- tories to supply them; to revise and standardize methods and classifica- tions, so that what is wanted may be most easily found, and the Direc- tory be made to serve its fullest use

as a business and social reference book and director of buyer and seller.

5. To decline any advertisement which has a tendency to mislead or which does not conform to business integrity.

6. To solicit subscriptions and ad- vertising solely upon the merits of the publications.

7. To avoid misrepresentation by statement or -inference regarding circulation, placing the test of refer- ence publicity upon its accessibility to seekers, rather than on the num- ber of copies sold.

8. To co-operate with approved organization and individuals en- gaged in creative advertising work.

9. To avoid unfair competition.

10. To determine what is the highest and largest function of Directories in public service, and then to strive in every legitimate way to promote that function.

$100 Reward will be paid by the Association of North American Directory Publishers for the arrest and conviction of any person or persons engaged in the publishing, collecting or canvassing for any fraudulent or fake directories.

ELECTRICAL

Light IS your best Salesman!

The power of light to sell goods has been demonstrated time and time again in stores throughout the country. People will buy what they can see well . .. they will buy more freely in the atmosphere of a modernly lighted store . . . they will be more satisfied with their purchases. Light also can be used to call customers attention to certain goods through flood lighting or spotlighting, and its applications to the display of merchandise are almost endless.

The proper use of light is a powerful sales fool .... a sales tool that you can use with profit in your business.
