Apartment houses of the two and four apartment type are rapidly being built, and for the family that prefers this mode of living, these apartment houses are so located as to make them easily accessible to the business district and other industrial plants and enterprises.

Rocky Mount has the usual fraternal orders, namely: Masons, Knights of Pythias, Odd Fellows, Junior Order of United American Mechanics, and Red Men. There are three civic organizations: Rotary Club, Kiwanis Club and Civitan Club; also Merchants' Association and Chamber of Commerce.

Red Cross Chapter

The Rocky Mount Chapter of the American Red Cross is an organization of which the people of this community are very proud.

12

INTRODUCTION

Boy Scouts of America

Rocky Mount is a part of the Eastern Carolina Coun- cil of the Boy Scouts of America, with an active district board headed by men who are enthusiastic Scouters. There are nine troops under the leadership of well-trained scout masters.

Welfare and Charity

Rocky Mount has a well-organized Associated Charities board, with full-time welfare worker and an able staff of assistants.

Salvation Army

Rocky Mount has a well-organized corps of Salvation Army workers, and this organization does very fine and con- structive work throughout the city and community.

Safety Council

Rocky Mount has recently organized a Class B Safety . Council, and the work of this organization is beginning to be felt in a very large way. It is divided into four groups, with a chairman at the head of each group-street and highway safety, safety in homes and schools, industrial safety and fire prevention.

Rocky Mount's steady growth has made necessary a definite policy of fire department extension, and Fire Sta- tion No. 2, with standard equipment, has recently been completed and is now a part of the fire department equip- ment of the city. The rigid restrictions on buildings in the fire district, which comprises the entire business part of the city, has, it is believed, been directly responsible for the absence of large fires in recent years, and a big loss by fire is, so far, unknown to the city.

Rocky Mount has three splendid hospitals, all on the accredited list of the American College of Surgeons and hav- ing on their staffs surgeons of wide reputation. Specialists for practically all diseases make these hospitals their head- quarters, and patients from a wide area come here for treat- ment. Two of these hospitals have training schools for nurses, and their graduates are accepted by all practicing physicians and surgeons. The other hospital, the Division Hospital for the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad, employs only registered nurses.

To prospective homeseekers and to individual citizens, Rocky Mount offers every factor that makes for happiness and ideal home conditions.

Manufacture, Industry and Trade

For manufacturers, Rocky Mount offers many induce- ments, among which are the source and supply of labor. The abundance of female labor in the Rocky Mount district is an inducement to new industries. There is also adequate male labor, both white and colored. There are no labor troubles in Rocky Mount, and with the exception of the railroad strike in 1932, strikes have been practically un- known. The small percentage of foreign-born (less than 1%) insures English-speaking labor for all classes. It fol- lows that this labor is not contaminated by foreign elements that promote unrest, and that one language makes it pos- sible to forestall labor trouble. Loyalty is typical of this class of labor.

Rocky Mount has one national bank and trust com- pany, and one state bank and trust company, together with one industrial bank, four building and loan associations and one fire insurance company.

13

INTRODUCTION

Rocky Mount, according to the 1930 Census of Distribu- tion, has 511 retail stores, with annual sales amounting to $13,610,624.

Rocky Mount is the shopping center of a wide area, em- bracing a radius of 50 to 70 miles. In addition to the retail stores, there are numerous wholesale houses handling gro- ceries, fruits and produce, hardware and notions. The city enjoys the reputation of being the jobbing center of a large territory. Situated in the hub of a fast-developing section, Rocky Mount has the natural advantages that attract people in all lines of business. It is truly the marketing and shop- ping center of eastern North Carolina.

Newspapers

The city boasts of one of the best daily newspapers in the state, The Evening Telegram. This paper enjoys a large circulation and is a member of the Associated Press.

The city also has a good weekly paper with a large circ- ulation, The Rocky Mount Herald.

Radio Station

Station WEED, in Rocky Mount, is the only broadcaster east of Raleigh in North Carolina. It is operated sixteen hours daily by a large staff, long experienced in radio broad- casting. It is splendidly equipped throughout and promises to become one of the South's outstanding stations.

The Rocky Mount Chamber of Commerce

The membership of the Rocky Mount Chamber of Com- merce is made up of the business and professional men of Rocky Mount and the farmers and growers of this section, who are not only interested in the work, but enter actively into the problems and tasks confronting the Chamber. It is divided into departments, industrial, agricultural, educa- tional, civic, commercial, and publicity, and all departments function and are headed by committees of able men.

The influence of this body has been largely responsible for the many developments of the city, and in every progres- sive movement, the Chamber of Commerce uses its agencies for the best interests of the community.

The management of the Chamber is in the hands of a board of directors, who employ a full-time executive secre- tary and an assistant secretary, and maintain offices at 119 N. E. Main St.

The City Directory

is the most effective and most economical method of reaching all the people all the time. Those who buy without looking at the list of those who sell do them- selves great injustice. The classified lists in the Business Directory form the best Buyers' Guide on earth. A modern, up-to-date method of getting what you want.

TRADE! You like

to patronize those concerns who are in business to stay.

It's human to expect that such busi- ness establishments always stand back of the wares they sell.

The advertising in this Directory is suggestive of the stability and per- manency of the advertisers.

Frauds, fakes, get-rich-quicks and other schemers have little use for directory advertising. It lives too long.

The modern City Directory is a business institution. It occupies a place peculiarly its own. It is as necessary to the progress and de- velopment of a city generally as anything naturally would be which deals with such a fundamental as the citizens themselves.

If you are not advertising your busi- ness in the Directory, may we ex- plain how and why it will pay you?,
