INTRODUCTION
Organizations and Clubs
Based on its population, Wilson is very well taken care of with respect to civic, fraternal and patriotic organizations and social clubs. The Rotary, Kiwanis and Lions clubs are rendering valuable civic and welfare work, and the same may be said of the Business and Professional Women's Club, the Woman's Club and the American Legion. These take an active part in all civic work. The leadership of civic work, however, is assumed by the Wilson Chamber of Com- merce, which is now at its peak in membership and activity. Based on population, it is the largest Chamber of Commerce in eastern North Carolina. All other organizations in Wil- son cooperate with the Chamber of Commerce when the occasion demands, and this has developed a very coopera-' tive feeling in Wilson that is a great asset. Wilson also has a very active credit bureau to supply credit reports for the business interests. It operates under the name of the Wil- son Credit Bureau.
Hospitals
Although Wilson and Wilson County are considered exceptionally favorable from a health standpoint, Wilson has four hospitals, each of brick construction, equipped with the most modern facilities. By reason of their equipment, efficiency and service, these hospitals have gained a splen- did reputation and are serving a large area in and around Wilson.
Aside from these hospitals, Wilson has a private clinic and a number of skilled physicians who are contributing factors to the hospitals and medical field of the city.
The Eastern State Tubercular Hospital, for many years a dream, has just been started, and when completed, will mean facilities for the care of 500 patients. This new hos- pital is located on the northern outskirts of Wilson and is modern in every design.
Recreation
Wilson is well-supplied with recreation facilities. These include a new $76,000 stadium, with a seating capacity of 3,000, in which both baseball and football can be played. Recreation Park, covering several acres, consists of a base- ball diamond, swimming pool, two tennis courts, and play- ground equipment for children. The city also has two other parks. There is a beautiful country club located three miles from the city limits. In addition to an attractive clubhouse, which is used for banquets and dances, the country club has a splendid eighteen-hole golf course, two tennis courts and a swimming pool.
Camp Charles, a Boy Scout camp which serves eastern North Carolina, is located fourteen miles east of Wilson. The Wilson Boy Scout Council was responsible for the build- ing of this fine camp. It covers about 73 acres, with lake, large mess hall, craft shop and cabins. Under-privileged girls also make use of the camp each summer.
Library
In 1921 the department of literature of the Woman's Club established a free public library in Wilson. Since 1935 the library has been sponsored by the Town and County and
25
INTRODUCTION
is free to all the people in same. The Town and County have recently constructed one of the most complete library build- ings in the state, at a cost of approximately $75,000. It is a most up-to-date building in every respect.
Municipal Building
The Town of Wilson has recently completed and moved into a fine modern municipal building, which cost $127,000. All branches of the City government are housed in this building.
Government
Wilson is governed by a mayor, a city-manager and board of aldermen of six men, one from each ward, who hold their office for two years and are elected by the peo- ple.
Wilson Cotton Market
Wilson is one of the leading cotton markets of eastern North Carolina, with sales aggregating between ten and twelve thousand bales per year. The county is served by 24 cotton gins. The largest domestic and foreign importers and exporters of cotton are represented on the Wilson market. There are two modern storage warehouses, both of which are bonded under the Federal and State warehouse system and are checked periodically by Federal inspectors to see that all cotton is accounted for, properly tagged, protected from the weather and insured for the full market value.
Wilson's Future
It is pointed out by many that Wilson has a bright future, due to its ideal location, transportation facilities, and agricultural and natural resources, all of which are important factors in attracting new industries. It would appear that Wilson is in position for industrial development, and many manufacturers are considering Wilson as a dis- tributing center for their products, as eastern North Car- olina can be so well served from this point. Many traveling men make Wilson headquarters on account of the conven- ience of working in and out of the city in serving eastern North Carolina. The North-South tourist traffic via Wilson has more than doubled within the past two years, and this type of business has proved a help to many lines of bus- iness that cater to tourists. As the "King of Tobacco," Wil- son may some day be engaged in the manufacture of many tobacco products. The people of Wilson are thinking in terms of expansion and commercial development and are most optimistic as to their city's future.
Wilson Chamber of Commerce
The Wilson Chamber of Commerce is recognized as the outstanding trade association in Eastern North Carolina. During the past six years it has been a contributing factor to the progress of Wilson and Wilson County. In addition to promoting such activities as trade events, industry, agri- culture, conventions, tourists and advertising, it has for the past five years promoted the North Carolina Tobacco Ex- position and Festival, which is one of the largest celebra- tions of its kind in the South. This festival has received

INTRODUCTION
nation-wide publicity in the leading newspaper and maga- zine publications, as well as the newsreels, and this year attracted 75,000 people.
The Wilson Chamber of Commerce also serves as a clearing-house and general bureau of information. Head- quarters for the Chamber are located in the lobby of the Cherry Hotel.

TRADE! You like
to patronize those concerns who are in business to stay.
It is natural to expect that such busi- ness establishments always stand back of what they sell.
The advertising in this Directory is suggestive of the stability and perman- ence of the advertisers.
Frauds, fakes, get-rich-quicks and other schemers have little use for directory advertising. It lives too long.
The modern City Directory is a busi- ness institution. It occupies a place peculiarly its own. It is as necessary to the progress and development of a city generally as anything naturally would be which deals with such a fundamental as the citizens themselves.
If you are not advertising your busi- ness in the Directory, may we explain how and why it will pay you?
