INTRODUCTION
Wilson's water supply is taken from a lake at the head of Contentnea Creek. The watershed and storage space are ample to meet every requirement. The filtering and pump- ing plant has a capacity of 3,000,000 gallons daily. The dis- tribution system and fire hydrants service reaches every part of the town. Sewers and water are available in every section. The demand at present is 1,500,000 gallons every 24 hours.
Educational Facilities
Wilson and Wilson County have a very fine school sys- tem, with attractive school buildings and splendid equip- ment. There are 54 schools for white and colored pupils in the county, having a total valuation of $1,536,853.
The Atlantic Christian College, located in Wilson, offers courses in higher education. Its enrollment for 1950-51 was approximately 500.
The City of Beautiful Trees
Wilson is known as "The City of Beautiful Trees," and though there are many residence streets in the city with a variety of lovely trees, Nash Street is considered the most beautiful, with Park Avenue deserving special recognition. Over a period of years several geographic and pictorial maga- zines have written special articles and given particular ref- erence to Nash Street, and have designated it as one of the seven most beautiful residential streets in the world. To the students of nature, and especially to those who admire beau- tiful trees, Nash Street is a real attraction. It offers an as- sortment of trees as follows: Pecan, birch, magnolia, walnut, umbrella, liveoak, cypress, hickory, pine, dogwood and willow oak. On spacious lawns in front of beautiful homes, these trees are found growing amid numerous kinds of shrubbery and many-colored flowers.

Wilson is the home of Radio Station WGTM (World's Greatest Tobacco Market). The station operates on a fre- quency of 1,340 kilocycles. The studios, which are located on U. S. 301 about one mile north of Wilson, have the latest radio equipment. The station has made definite contri- butions to the civic and social welfare of the city and county. Wilson also is the home of WGTM-FM, at present the most powerful FM station in eastern North Carolina. It operates on 96.9 on your FM dial. Wilson also is the home of WVOT (1,000 watts), which has been outstanding in its contribu- tions to civic betterment.
Hospitals
Although Wilson and Wilson County are considered ex- ceptionably favorable from a health standpoint, Wilson has four hospitals, each of brick construction, equipped with the most modern facilities. By reason of their equipment, ef- ficiency and service, these hospitals have gained a splendid reputation and are serving a large area in and around Wilson.
Aside from these hospitals, Wilson has a private clinic and a number of skilled physicians who are contributing factors to the hospitals and medical field of the city.
The Eastern North Carolina Sanatorium, for many years a dream, has been established and is operating on the out- skirts of Wilson. A 200-room hospital, it furnishes adequate facilities for the treatment of tuberculosis. Patients in this hospital come from all sections of eastern North Carolina to receive treatment. This institution has furnished much to the medical interest of the state at large.

clubs is spirited and intense. The civic and social welfare of the community and the county is ever before each or- ganization, and the contributions of these groups have been manifold. The Rotary, Kiwanis and Lions clubs, the Business and Professional Women's Club, the Woman's Club, the Junior Woman's Club, the American Legion, the Amvets, the VFW Post, the Wilson Exchange Club, the Wilson Civi- tan Club and the Wilson Junior Chamber of Commerce have centered their activities on projects that will benefit the community and at the same time, aid substantially in national unity. All organizations in Wilson cooperate whole- heartedly with the Wilson Chamber of Commerce in its work of coordinatinf civic activities and interest throughout the city and the county.
Recreation
Wilson is well supplied with recreation facilities. These include a $76,000 stadium, with a seating capacity of 3,500, in which both baseball and football can be played. Recrea .. tion Park, covering several acres, consists of a baseball diamond, swimming pool, two tennis courts, a diamond for day and night softball, and playground equipment for chil- dren. The city also has four other parks. There is a beau- tiful country club located three miles from the city limits. In addition to an attractive clubhouse, which is used for banquets and dances, the Country Club has a splendid eighteen-hole golf course, and a swimming pool. The city has a full-time recreation director and a recreation com- mission.
Camp Charles, a Boy Scout camp serving eastern North Carolina, is located fourteen miles east of Wilson. The Wilson Boy Scout Council was responsible for the building of this fine camp. It covers about 73 acres, with lake, large mess hall, craft shop and cabins. Under-privileged girls also make use of the camp each summer.

INTRODUCTION
Library
In 1921 the Department of Literature of the Woman's Club established a free public library in Wilson. Since 1935 the library has been sponsored by the Town and County and is free to all the people in same. The Town and County have constructed one of the most complete library buildings in the state, at a cost of approximately $75,000. It is a most up-to-date building in every respect and houses some 15,000 volumes.
Municipal Buildings
All executive and administrative offices of the Town of Wilson are centered in the Municipal Building, constructed in 1940 at a cost of $127,000. This centralization aids in efficient and economic city government.
Government
Wilson is governed by a mayor, a city-manager, and a board of aldermen composed of six men, one from each ward, elected to hold office for two years.
Wilson Cotton Market
Wilson is one of the leading cotton markets of eastern North Carolina, with sales aggregating between ten and twelve thousand bales per year. The county is served by 26 cotton gins. The largest domestic and foreign importers and exporters of cotton are represented on the Wilson market.
Retail and Wholesale Trade
With an active Chamber of Commerce and a fine Re- tail Merchants' Division of this Chamber of Commerce, Wilson is slowly making great strides in the wholesale and retail field.

INTRODUCTION
In 1950 alone, Wilson added some 24 new businesses to its payrolls and retail and wholesale power.
Wilson's wholesale sales totaled $62,441,000 in 1950.
Wilson has a retail trading area of 40 miles radius in which live some 400,000 persons, while it has a wholesale trading area of 100 miles radius in which live some 1,650,000 persons, or approximately half the entire population of North Carolina.
Wilson's effective buying income for 1950, according to the 1950 "Survey of Buying Power" of Sales Management, was $28,478,000.
Wilson welcomes more wholesalers and retailers.
Wilson's Future
It is pointed out by many that Wilson has a bright future, due to its ideal location, transportation facilities and agricultural and natural resources, all of which are import- ant factors in attracting new industries. It would appear that Wilson is in position for industrial development, and many manufacturers are considering Wilson as a distributing center for their products, as eastern North Carolina can be so well served from this point. Many traveling men make Wilson headquarters on account of the convenience of work- ing in and out of the city in serving eastern North Carolina. As the "King of Tobacco," Wilson may some day be engaged in the manufacture of many tobacco products. The people of Wilson are thinking in terms of expansion and commer- cial development and are most optimistic as to their city's future.
Wilson Chamber of Commerce
The Wilson Chamber of Commerce is recognized as one of the outstanding trade associations in eastern North Caro- lina. During the past dozen years it has been a contribut- ing factor to the progress of Wilson and Wilson County. In addition to promoting such activities as trade events, industry, agriculture, conventions, tourists and advertising, it has promoted the North Carolina Tobacco Tamasha (Indian for "Social Gathering"), which is one of the largest celebrations of its kind in the South. This festival has re- ceived nation-wide publicity in the leading newspapers and magazine publications, as well as the newsreels.
The Wilson Chamber of Commerce also serves as a clearing-house and general bureau of information. Head- quarters for the Chamber are located in the lobby of the Cherry Hotel.
