The City of Beautiful Trees
Wilson is known as "The City of Beautiful Trees," and though there are many residence streets in the city with a variety of lovely trees, Nash Street is considered the most beautiful, with Park Avenue deserving special recognition. Over a period of years several geographic and pictorial magazines have written special articles and given particular reference to Nash Street and have designated it as one of the seven most beautiful residential streets in the world. Recreation
Wilson is well supplied with recreation facilities. These include a modern stadium, with a seating capacity of 3,500, which is used for both baseball and football, as well as other outdoor events. Recreation Park, covering 15 acres, has a large swimming pool, lighted tennis courts, lighted softball diamond, baseball diamond, picnic areas, playground equip- ment and a lighted area for activities such as basketball, volleyball, shuffleboard and other sports. INTRODUCTION
Public Buildings
All executive and administrative offices of the City of Wilson are located in the Municipal Building, constructed in 1940 at a cost of $127,000. The Wilson County Courthouse, constructed in 1924, is located in the center of the business district.
Government
Wilson is governed by a mayor and six aldermen who are elected for two-year terms. The administrative head of the city government is a city manager, who is appointed by the board of aldermen.
Retail and Wholesale Trade
Wilson is the retail shopping center for a large agricul- tural section. In 1954, retail sales in the city totaled $35,500,- 000, according to "Sales Management Survey of Buying Power." More than 300 retail establishments are available to serve the needs of the public.
Wilson's Future
It is pointed out by many that Wilson has a bright future, due to its ideal location, transportation facilities and agricultural and natural resources, all of which are import- ant factors in attracting new industries. It would appear that Wilson is in position for industrial development, and many manufacturers are considering Wilson as a distributing cen- ter for their products, as eastern North Carolina can be so well served from this point. Many traveling men make Wilson headquarters on account of the convenience of working in and out of the city in serving eastern North Carolina. As the "King of Tobacco," Wilson may some day be engaged in the manufacture of many tobacco products. The people of Wilson are thinking in terms of expansion and commer- cial development and are most optimistic as to their city's future.
Wilson Chamber of Commerce
The Wilson Chamber of Commerce is recognized as one of the outstanding trade associations in eastern North Caro- lina. During the past dozen years it has been a contributing factor to the progress of Wilson and Wilson County.
The Wilson Chamber of Commerce also serves as a clear- ing house and general bureau of information. Headquarters for the Chamber are located in its own building at 220 Broad Street.
