INTRODUCTION

the business district and has a collection of 39,000 vol- umes.

Public Buildings

All executive and administrative offices of the city of Wilson are located in the Municipal Building, con- structed in 1940 at a cost of $127,000. The Wilson County Courthouse, constructed in 1924, is located in the center of the business district.

Government

Wilson is governed by a mayor and six aldermen who are elected for two-year terms. The administrative head of the city government is a city manager, who is appointed by the board of aldermen.

Retail and Wholesale Trade

Wilson is the retail shopping center for a large agri- cultural section. In 1956, retail sales in the city totaled $41,180,000, according to "Sales Management Survey of Buying Power." More than 300 retail establishments are available to serve the needs of the public.

Wilson's Future

It is pointed out by many that Wilson has a bright future, due to its ideal location, transportation facilities and agricultural and natural resources, all of which are important factors in attracting new industries. It would appear that Wilson is in position for industrial develop- ment, and many manufacturers are considering Wilson as a distributing center for their products, as eastern North Carolina can be so well served from this point. Many traveling men make Wilson headquarters on ac- count of the convenience of working in and out of the city in serving eastern North Carolina. As the "King of Tobacco," Wilson may some day be engaged in the manu- facture of many tobacco products. The people of Wilson are thinking in terms of expansion and commercial deve- lopment and are most optimistic as to their city's future.

Wilson Chamber of Commerce

The Wilson Chamber of Commerce is recognized as one of the outstanding trade associations in eastern North Carolina. During the past dozen years it has been a contributing factor to the progress of Wilson and Wil- son County.

The Wilson Chamber of Commerce also serves as a clearing house and general bureau of information. Head- quarters for the Chamber are located in its own build- ing at 220 Broad Street.

-thus assuring you the ultimate service that skill and care can produce in the way of City Directories or other reference media, and providing pro- tection against fraudulent advertising schemes which operate under the name of Directories.

The following "Standards of Practice," adopted at the inception of the Association of North American Directory Publishers in 1898, and strictly ad- hered to over the years, is your guarantee of satisfactory Directory Service.

The publisher of a Directory should dedicate his best efforts to the cause of business uplift and social service, and to this end pledges himself:

1. To consider, first, the interest of the user of the book.

2. To subscribe to and work for truth, honesty and accuracy in all departments.

3. To avoid confusing duplication of listings, endeavoring to classify every concern under the one head- ing that best describes it, and to treat additional listings as advertis- ing, to be charged for at regular rates.

4. To increase public knowledge of what Directories contain; to study public needs and make Direc- tories to supply them; to revise and standardize methods and classifica- tions, so that what is wanted may be most easily found, and the Direc- tory be made to serve its fullest use

as a business and social reference book and director of buyer and seller.

5. To decline any advertisement which has a tendency to mislead or which does not conform to business integrity.

6. To solicit subscriptions and ad- vertising solely upon the merits of the publications.

7. To avoid misrepresentation by statement or inference regarding circulation, placing the test of refer- ence publicity upon its accessibility to seekers, rather than on the num- ber of copies sold.

8. To co-operate with approved organization and individuals en- gaged in creative advertising work.

9. To avoid unfair competition.

10. To determine what is the highest and largest function of Directories in public service, and then to strive in every legitimate way to promote .hat . unction.

$100 Reward will be paid by the Association of North American Directory Publishers for the arrest and conviction of any person or porsons engaged in the publishing, collecting or canvassing for any fraudulent or fake directories.

Please! Do Not Lend Your CITY DIRECTORY

IT COSTS YOU MONEY-Every Time it Is Loaned

The practice of lending your City Directory, in a great measure, is responsible for the increasing cost of Directory Service.

The reason is :-

There is a definite cost involved in the making of the DIRECTORY of Your City.

THIS COST MUST BE ABSORBED BY THE SUBSCRIBERS-BE THEY ONE-OR BE THEY 1000.

If there were but ONE SUBSCRIBER to the CITY DIRECTORY-THE ONE SUBSCRIBER would of necessity have to absorb THE WHOLE COST.

If there were 100 SUBSCRIBERS-each one would have to absorb 1/100th PART OF THE WHOLE COST.

If there were 1000 SUBSCRIBERS-sach one would have to absorb 1/1000th PART OF THE WHOLE COST.

From which it is obvious that the GREATER the number of subscribers -the LESSER the cost to each.

And

It is also obvious that the LESSER the number of subscribers-the GREATER the cost to each.

Every time you loan your City Directory the LESS NECESSITY THERE IS FOR THE BORROWER TO SUBSCRIBE FOR THE SERVICE.

MORE BORROWERS result in FEWER SUBSCRIBERS which means IN- CREASED COST.

1. Good Advertising - aims to inform the consumer and help him to buy more intelligently.

2. Good Advertising - tells the truth, avoiding mis- statement of facts as well as possible deception through implication or omission. It makes no claims which can- not be met in full and without further qualification. It uses only testimonials of competent witnesses.

3. Good Advertising -conforms to the generally ac- cepted standards of good taste. It seeks public accept- ance on the basis of the merits of the product or service advertised rather than by the disparagement of com- peting goods. It tries to avoid practices that are offensive or annoying.

4. Good Advertising - recognizes both its economic responsibility to help reduce distribution costs and its social responsibility in serving the public interest.
