INTRODUCTION

Location

Wilson is located on the main line of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad and the Norfolk Southern Railroad. It is served by U. S. Highway 301, the principal tourist route between eastern states and Florida. Other highways serving Wilson include U. S. 264, a major east-west route, and U. S. 117, between Wilson and Wilmington. A network of paved highways connects Wilson with all sections of the country. Due to its geographic location and its accessibility, Wilson is stead- ily increasing in importance as a distribution center.

Power, Lights, Gas and Water

The electric, gas and water plants and distribution systems in Wilson are municipally owned. The City of Wilson owns approximately 400 miles of electric distribution lines outside the corporate limits. The city electric department serves more than 5,000 rural customers and furnishes electricity wholesale to six other communities. The city utilities, including land, buildings, and distri- bution systems, are valued at $7, 669, 639. The electric plant has the latest equip- ment, with a generator capacity of 27,500 k.w. In addition, the city has a 14,000 k.w. inter-connection with Carolina Power and Light Company, insuring an un- interrupted supply of power. Wilson's water supply is taken from two reservoirs supplied by Contentnea Creek and Toisnot Creek. The 311 square mile water- shed has proved adequate to meet the city's needs even in times of severe drought. The filtering plant has a capacity of 10,000,000 gallons a day, to meet present requirements of 4,225,000 gallons daily. There is a new filtering plant under construction, which will have a capacity of 3,000,000 gallons per day.

Ralph L. Fike High School

Educational Facilities

Wilson and Wilson County have a fine school system, with attractive build- ings and an excellent staff. The city system consists of two high schools, one junior high school, and seven elementary schools. Since 1949, over $2,500,000 has been spent on the construction of new schools in the city system.

Atlantic Christian College, fully accredited, located in Wilson, offers four- year college courses to Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees. It also offers a one-year secretarial course and night school classes in a variety of subjects.

The Wilson Industrial Education Center, an industrial trade school, has been established by the city and county to develop vocations and further the training of craftsmen employed in local industries.

The City of Beautiful Trees

Wilson is known as "The City of Beautiful Trees", and though there are many residence streets in the city with a variety of lovely trees, Nash Street is considered the most beautiful, with Park Avenue deserving special recognition. Over a period of years several geographic and pictorial magazines have written special articles and given particular reference to Nash Street and have desig- nated it as one of the seven most beautiful residential streets in the world. To the students of nature and especially to those who admire beautiful trees, Nash Street is a real attraction. It offers an assortment of trees as follows: pecan, birch, magnolia, walnut, umbrella, liveoak, cypress, hickory, pine, dogwood, and willow oak. On spacious lawns in front of beautiful homes, these trees are found growing amid numerous kinds of shrubbery and many colored flowers.

Wilson County Court House

Wilson's Modern Recreation Center

Recreation

Wilson is well supplied with recreation facilities. These include a modern stadium, with a seating capacity of 3,500, which is used for both baseball and football, as well as other outdoor events. Recreation Park, covering 15 acres, has a large swimming pool, lighted tennis courts, lighted softball diamond, pic- nic areas, playground equipment and a lighted area for activities such as basket - ball, volleyball, shuffleboard and other sports. Two well equipped recreational buildings were completed in 1958. There are twelve public parks. The city has a trained staff of full time workers in the recreation department. The Wilson Country Club has an 18-hole golf course, swimming pool and tennis courts.

Library

In 1921, the Department of Literature of the Woman's Club established a free public library in Wilson. Since 1935 the library has been sponsored by the city and county. It is located in a modern building on the edge of the business district and has a collection of approximately 50,000 volumes.

Public Buildings

All executive and administrative offices of the city of Wilson are located in the Municipal Building, constructed in 1940 at a cost of $127,000. The Wilson County Courthouse, constructed in 1924, is located in the center of the business district.

Government

Wilson is governed by a mayor and six aldermen who are elected for two-year terms. The administrative head of the city government is a city manager, who is appointed by the board of aldermen.

Retail and Wholesale Trade

Wilson is the retail shopping center for a large agricultural section. In 1960, retail sales in the city totaled $38, 148,000, according to Sales Management "Sur- vey of Buying Power". More than 343 retail establishments are available to serve the needs of the public.

Wilson's Future

It is pointed out by many that Wilson has a bright future, due to its ideal lo- cation, transportation facilities, agricultural, and natural resources, all of which are important factors in attracting new industries. It would appear that Wilson is in position for industrial development, and many manufacturers are consider- ing Wilson as a distributing center for their products, as eastern North Caro- lina can be sowell served from this point. Many traveling men make Wilson their headquarters because of the convenience of serving their territory from here. As the "King of Tobacco", Wilson may some day be engaged in the manufacture of many tobacco products. The people of Wilson are thinking in terms of ex- pansion and commercial development and are most optimistic as to their city's future.

Wilson Chamber of Commerce

The Wilson Chamber of Commerce is recognized as one of the outstanding trade associations in eastern North Carolina. During the past dozen years it has been a contributing factor to the progress of Wilson and Wilson County. The Wilson Chamber of Commerce also serves as a clearing house and gen- eral bureau of information. Headquarters for the Chamber are located in its own building at 220 Broad Street.
