SALEM PRINTING OFFICE,

The Salem printing office was established by Mr. John C. Blum in November, 1827, January 6th, 1829, the "Weekly Gleaner," a family newspaper, appeared. In 1830 the paper was enlarged un- der the name of "Farmers Reporter and Weekly Chronicle," was published five years. In 1841 the "Carolina Gazett," was publish- ed and continued for two years, followed in 1851 by "The People's Press," which has been published over twenty-five years. The well known and popular "Farmer's and Planter's Almanac" was com- menced in 1828, and has been published uninterruptedly by the same family for half a century. It has the largest circulation of any publication in the State.

H. H. REYNOLDS-AND HIS RED ELEPHANT.

Among the enterprising plug manufacturers of Winston, N. C., Mr. H. H. Reynolds stands among the first who have made money out of the tobacco business. This gentleman was raised in the . famous yellow tobacco section of Virginia, his home being on the line of Henry and Patrick counties. His life has been devoted to the tobacco business and he is to-day among the best judges of the weed South. This is essential to every man who would make a success out of tobacco manufacturing.

Mr. Reynolds came to Winston several years ago and in 1885 he built the immense factory which stands on the west side of Liberty street and which he now occupies. This factory is 53x160 feet and is five stories high. From 150 to 250 hands are employed in mak- ing the famous "Red Elephant" and other popular brands of plug tobacco. The trade mark for the "Red Elephant" brand registered in 1883 and immense quantities of this popular tobacco have been made and used all over the country. In addition to the intrinsic value of this tobacco, it has been exceedingly popular and has been

among the most successful registered brands. In addition to the "Red Elephant" Mr. Reynolds makes various other brands of plug and twist tobacco, among which are: "Reynolds Best," "Honey Dew," "City Talk," "Planters Pride," "Reaper," "Reynolds' Jack," "Twin City," "Honey Comb 3 ply twist."

In making these brands only the fine leaf grown in the Piedmont section is used and the very best "G C." Licorice and other first class ingredients. Skilled labor only is employed in the factory and many of his workmen are those who have been in his factory ever since Mr. Reynolds began manufacturing. All these things put together and added to them the energy and enterprise which Mr. R. brings into his business, we clearly see why it is possible for him to enjoy such large success.

Last year over one-million pounds of leaf was manufactured. Mr. Reynolds personally superintends his factory as well as the pur- chase of the leaf used therein. These goods wherever sold hold their own among customers and for them their is a steady demand.

He has always taken an active interest in every movemen that had for its object the welfare of his fellow citizens. In commercial circles he enjoys the highest confidence and is recognized as an honorable and reliable business man, a libesal and public spirited citizen, who commands the esteem and respect of all men.

TWIN-CITY DAILY.

THE TWIN-CITY DAILY is the only daily paper published in Winston-Salem, has a larger local circulation than any other paper, and it is constantly increasing.

It is the largest evening daily published in North Carolina, is bright and spicy and keeps abreast of the times. It is a wide- awake news paper, gives the news of the day at home and abroad, latest telegraphic dispatches, and a full record of home happenings and local events of interest.

It is progressive, believes in keeping at the front in the march, and is always ready to push Winston-Salem and every enterprise in which they are interested. It is a paper of the people, publish- ed for the people, read by the people and endorsed by the people. It goes into every household and its merits as an advertising me- dium are attested by the liberal patronage it receives from busi- ness men. J. O. Foy, editor and proprietor.

Office up stairs, Liberty Block, Winston, N. C.

THE UNION REPUBLICAN.

This newspaper, one of the institutions of Winston-Salem, was established in 1872. Two years thereafter, its title, good will, etc., were purchased by its present owner and editor, J. W. Goslen, who came to the work with some experience in newspaper enterprise, and a graduate of one of the leading colleges of the State. The

paper has been under his management and control for a period covering now about sixteen years.

Four years ago the paper was enlarged to an eight column folio, an entire outfit of new type, new power Potter press and an engine were purchased. The entire machinery of the office, including the job department, is operated by steam power and is one of the most complete newspaper and job offices in the State. The circulation now numbers 3,000 and is one of the leading newspapers in the section. It is Republican in politics, printed on good book, in neat style, every Thursday, and mailed to subscribers, at $1.50 per annum.

Besides the editor-in-chief, it has a local editor who is also fore- man of the office, Mr. George H. Rights-a canvasser and corres- pondent, Mr. M. F. Masten; and a corps of regular correspondents, including Washington, D. C., who write short and newsy letters weekly.
