Nearly $40.00 of the year's appropriation remains unex- pended, in addition to which $150.00 should be appropriated this year to keep the grounds in respectable condition

We have been called upon in several instances to assist in providing a remedy for unsanitary surroundings. Our direc- tions have usually been well received, and acted upon to the benefit of the parties concerned. As the duties and require- ments of the Board of Health become more generally known, its opportunities for doing good will increase. During the past year we have had an epidemic of measles in a light form ; also a good share of La Grippe, with only a few cases of the more dangerous diseases.

REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE ON
THE TOWN LIBRARY
The number of volumes now on the catalogue is 3879, of which 182 have been added since the last report. Of these, 117 have been purchased by the committee, with the annual appropriation, and 65 have been presented. The gifts com- prise many valuable works, including the recent volumes of popular English and American magazines. We append a list of donors and take this opportunity to express the thanks of the town for their liberality, and the hope that their example may be followed by others.
The number of volumes taken out from March 1, 1889, to March 1, 1890, is 5261. This large circulation affords the best evidence of the usefulness of the library, and its apprecia- tion by our citizens. At the trifling expense to the town of 23 cents per volume, the reader has the use of the best books of the day for a period varying from one week for the newest books, to three weeks for those of older date. This is a small fraction of the cost of the use of circulating libraries, in which, it is believed, the customary charge is two cents per day.
The estimated expenses for the coming year are as follows : Purchase of new books, $100 00
Rent of room and care of library, 90 00
Insurance for one year, 30 00
Binding and repairing books, and sundries, 20 00
- $240 00
24
The committee ask for the appropriation of this amount ($240 00).
