SCHOOL REPORT.

REPORT OF SCHOOL DISTRICT, NO. I.

The committee of District No. I respectfully submit the following report : We have had as usual one term of 10, and two of 13 weeks each in each of our schools and although it is not reasonable to expect as good results when a change, or frequent changes of teachers are made as when a good teacher is continued through the year or longer, yet your committee believe that in each school study progress has been made and that all scholars who have been constant in attendance have received from their teachers that patient and firm discipline and thorough instruction that should be satisfactory alike to par- ents and pupils. The indifference of parents in regard to the attendance of their children is a greater hindrance to the suc- cess and value of our schools than the inefficiency of teachers. In too many instances, some real or imagined defect in the service of the teacher is a sufficient excuse with the too indul- gence parent for depriving children of that school discipline which, though it may not be perfect in every respect, is far preferable to the idleness and ignorance for which it is ex- changed.

A better appreciation of the value of our schools and a more united and friendly striving of parents with teachers to secure for their children industrious habits of good order and study would do much to elevate the character and increase the usefulness of what should be our most cherished institution.

32 REPORT OF TOWN SCHOOL BOARD.

The facts required of us to be reported to the town at this time will be found chiefly in the appended table.

There have been in attendance upon our schools for the past year, 344 different scholars not less than five years of age to whom 29 weeks of schooling have been given.

There have been 28S scholars that have pursued the study of Arithmetic ; 211 that have studied Geography ; Grammar, 107 : History, 60 ; Physiology, 134 : Penmanship, 261 ; Read- ing, 317 : Spelling, 326 : Book-keeping, 6 ; Algebra, S.

The number of children reported by the selectmen be- tween the ages of 5 and 15 years, 304. The amount of money expended for school purposes during the year has been greater than for any previous year, while the length of terms has been slightly less than for last year. This has been due mainly to two causes. A new school has been added at No. Walpole, and less money has been saved by uniting schools in other parts of the town.

When the terms opened in the spring, it was found that. the number of scholars enrolled in the primary school in No. 2 made necessary the establishing of a new school in that sec- tion.

A room was selected for the purpose, that was central, light and convenient and that could be had at a yearly rental of fifty dollars. The treasurer's report will show the cost of furnishing to have been $106.00

In the south and east parts of the town the schools united have been for the year, No. 7 to No. 6 ; No. 13 to No. S ; for two terms, No. 11 to No. 9. The yearly expense has been reduced thereby a little less than three hundred dollars, against four hundred and fifty dollars last year. It did not seem prac- ticable to make any further reduction in the number of schools. During the year, the "free text-book" law has been complied with, and that provision of the law which allowed school offi-

33

cers in making their first purchase of books, to effect a change in any 01 all books they issue was so far considered that we deemed it advisable to introduce new books in all our schools on two subjects, viz : Reading and Arithmetic.

Both there changes are satisfactory to the board and have been generally well received. In this connection an ap- propriation of $500 will be needed to pay for past purchases and provide for the coming year.

To report in a special way the comparative merits of each school has not seemed to us to be expedient, since under the present system such report could not aid committees in select- ing teachers for future terms. And if a few might be named who have earned especial mention by excelling their associates in bringing to their work a better acquaintance with the require- ments of their position, in conforming themselves more readi- ly to the duties of their calling, and above all, by a greater de- gree of commendable enterprise, it will be thought by them a sufficient return for their faithful service, that their services are again sought.

It will be enough for us to report here that no distinctive feature has marked the progress of our schools as a whole. While it is thought that some have been exceptionally pros- perous, a few have not been all that patrons or committee could wish.

The expense incident to the new school at No. 2 has been partly met this year by the dog money which was added to the school fund, but as this is not likely to occur next year this expense will need to be provided for in some other way or the schools will fall short some two or three weeks from what they have been this year.
