EXETER THROUGH THE YEARS
The settlement at the falls of the Squamscot, called Exeter by its founder, was made in 1638 by Rev. John Wheelwright and a company of loyal friends. He had been banished from Massachusetts for preaching a doctrine, to us obscure, which was disapproved by the authorities, and sought to satisfy the order of banishment by removing beyond the limits of the Bay. Coming to the lower Squamscot by water late in the fall of 1637, he passed the winter with some one of those already established in the region, perhaps with Edward Hilton at Dover Point or on the site of Newfields, and made his settlement in the spring of 1638. There were probably a very few settlers, adventuring squatters, already located in the region, but we have no clear knowledge concerning them, and the tra- dition is vague. Wheelwright took title to a large stretch of land from the local Indians by two deeds, one of which is now in the possession of Phillips Exeter Academy.
