REPORT OF LIBRARY
We respectfully submit the following report of the Barnstead Free Public Library for the year 1920 :
The financial statistics suggested by the library commissioners in the form they wish carried out will be found in the treasurer's report. Books have been constantly advancing in price so that the number of volumes bought has not been so large as in former years. We have, however, been able to add 84 by purchase. In selecting these it has been our aim to provide a variety to suit the needs of all classes. We endeavor each year to procure choice reading for the young people as our school children are fre- quent visitors at the library. It would be hard to estimate the amount of good derived from reading books but many will appreciate the benefits they personally have received.
We wish at this time to gratefully acknowledge a box of books sent to the library by Mrs. Emery of Boston.
The library will be open Tuesday and Saturday afternoons from 2 until 5 oclock and Saturday even- ings from 7 until 9, except holidays.

REPORT OF SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS
To the Citizens and School Board of Barnstead :
I herein submit my fourth report as Superintend- . ent of Schools, it being the fourth in the series of such reports.
Following the plan and constructive policy be- gun in 1919-1920 of placing one usable school house a year in condition to meet the state minimum re- quirements in sanitation and lighting, your School Board have installed cement vaults at the Centre School house, a cement underpining and floor to the shed and placed sufficient windows on the left of pupils to meet requirements in lighting, after par- titioning off a part of the room.
The school building and yard at the south should receive next attention. Here conditions are such that either a new site should be considered or the present yard properly graded and drained. The building itself is in bad condition. There is im- mediate need of additional light, repairs to ceiling and walls, and a thorough painting interior and ex- terior. The present vaults are a menace to the health of the children and should be replaced by cement or kaustine vaults.
Locke's Corner house does not meet requirements in lighting, the walls and ceiling need whitening and the toilets are similar to those at the South.
Some definite action should be taken to unite the Berry and White Oak schools and one of these build- ings put in proper condition.
It is not economical from an educational or financial standpoint to run both of these schools as they exist today.
As the school house and grounds at Shackford's Corner were condemned by the State Board of Health I would recommend that action be taken to
43
instruct the School Board to dispose of this property.
Medical Inspection
Dr. Tuttle reported the following conditions :
Number pupils examined 98
Number teachers examined . 9 Number cases remedied since last examination. . 25
Number cases needing attention :
Defective teeth 46
Hypertrophied tonsils 26
Adniods 27
Defective eyes 26
Malnutrition 2
School Work
On school work we have aimed to follow the state course as near as conditions in rural schools with all grades, one teacher and limited supply of equip- ment in books, etc., will permit. As far as possible we have eliminated educational fallacies and put emplasis on the old fashioned word "work," and directing our efforts to the fundamentals "reading, writing and arithmetic," and the use of good Eng- lish in oral and written work, in composition and conversation.
For the most part the teachers have been devoted to their work and conscientious in its execution.
In September five pupils were admitted in the Pittsfield High School, two from the South, two from the Centre and one from the Parade. Another from Locke's Corner passed the entrance examina- tion but did not care to continue his work.
I wish to express my appreciation to the citizens of Barnstead for their generous financial support of the schools. I realize the sacrifice you are making to give the youth of your community a fair chance in life. I trust that you will remain steadfast in the
44
conviction that there shall be no educational re- retrenchment. The problem of teacher shortage re- mains about the same as a year ago. Let us remem- ber that in final analysis the prosperity of a com- munity, state or nation is in direct ratio to the appro- priations for education.
In conclusion, I wish to express my appreciation to the School Board for their assistance, to the teach- ers for their co-operation, to parents and citizens, for their support and courtesy.
Respectfully submitted, FREDERICK T. JOHNSON, Superintendent of Schools.
