GILMANTON TOWN REPORT.

Report of School Board.

To the citizens of Gilmanton the following report is respect- fully submitted :

The number of schools maintained for the year have been twelve, namely Kelley, Potter, Loon Pond, Smith Meeting House, Corner, Jones' Mills, Allen's Mills, Gale, Guinea Ridge, Lougeetown, Lamprey and Iron Works.

Whole number teachers employed, seventeen. One male and sixteen female. Whole number of scholars attending school the past year was two hundred.

It is with considerable gratification, that your School Board is able to report the schools in town to be in a very prosper- ous condition, There has been considerable improvement in the percentage of attendance in nearly all schools during the past year. This means far more to the success, or failure of our schools than most people think. The average school life of most children does not exceed ten years. Hence if a child is allowed to be absent from school one or two days in a week during the school year, he must either do the work of ten years in six or eight, or else it will be forever lost to him. It should be a matter of conscience with parents and guardians to see that the children under their care and protec- tion receive their just dues. A child who is defrauded of his educational rights is a hundred times more wronged than one from whom money is taken. In this age of the world and enlightenment, the uneducated man or woman must stay at the foot of the ladder. It behooves every parent to see to it, that their children are well equipped for life's battles with that potent weapon, education, lest the child in after years con- demns them for defrauding them of their just dues. It matters not what pursuit in life a boy or girl may be called to fill, ·whether a tiller of the soil, a business man or woman or

38

GILMANTON TOWN REPORT.

whether he enters one of the professions, a good practical education is a solid rock to build upon. The best way to ob- tain this, is to improve every opportunity to attend school. Let there be unison between teacher and parent. The teach- er is your child's best friend, therefore co-operate with her. The teacher should be a well educated person ; capable of adapting herself to the needs of those placed under her care. She should also be able to teach, and thoroughly explain much subject matter not laid down in the text-book. The re- quirements of the child today are far more expansive than in former years.

REPAIRS.

During the past year the Loon Pond school building has been painted and kalsomined inside, and a hard wood floor laid at an expense of about $55.00. The Gale school house has been equipped with the new Chandler seats in place of the old hard board desks. Which not only improves the looks of the school room, but adds materially to the comfort of the scholars. The expense of this was $38.08.

We have one or two school buildings that will need shing- ling this coming spring, and they ought to be painted outside.

In conclusion we wish to express our appreciation of all courtesy shown us by teachers and parents during the past year.

Respectfully,

C. FRANK PAGE, School Board FRANK N. MERRILL, of

LAURA E. VARNEY, Gilmanton.
