REPORT OF SCHOOL BOARD.

The school board of Gilmanton take pleasure in presenting to all interested its annual report.

The number of schools supported the past year has been twelve, the same as last year. Whole number of pupils at- tending not less than two weeks, 197 boys, 89 girls, 108.

Number of teachers employed during the year has been nineteen, one male and eighteen females. For further infor- mation in regard to schools, by whom, and where taught, studies pursued, attendance, etc., we refer you to the statisti- cal table.

Aside from the literary money (about $115,) our schools have been maintained by money raised by taxation. We were notified by the state superintendent that Gilmanton would not receive any part of the state appropriation for schooling in back towns, this year for there were rising sixty towns in the state in a worse condition regarding school privileges than is Gilmanton. We earnestly hope the above fact will not neces- sitate shortening the schools the coming year. Let us bear in mind that the money invested in educating our children will bring safer returns to them than a bank account. No man can take it from them. In this era of the world's history an education is not a luxury, it is a necessity to every child who is expected to make a success of life. An education such as our schools afforded fifty, or even twenty-five years ago, is not enough to meet the demands of today. More is required, more must be given. While we have not by any means attained the height to which we aspire yet the close of each year sees our work on a better basis. Since we have been able to maintain thirty weeks of school in a year instead of twenty weeks, the results have been doubly profitable and satisfactory.

Every year we are obliged to call the attention of parents

and guardians to lack of interest in regard to regular attend. ance. We make all reasonable allowance for sickness and conditions of weather, but these form a very small percentage of the absences that we are obliged to report to the state superintendent. A child is morally wronged if he is kept from school unless for one of the above-mentioned causes. A tardiness is still more inexcusable. Teach your child to be prompt. "Ignorance of the law excuses no one," is a trite saying, but right here we wish to insert the article relating to this subject, that all may know that children are required by law to attend school every day that school is in session, and also the penalty for non-compliance with the same. Chapter 93, section 14, as amended by chapter 61, session laws of 1903. Every person having the custody and control of a child between the ages of eight and fourteen years, or of a child under the age of sixteen years who cannot read at sight and write legibly simple sentences in the English language, residing in a school district in which a public school is annually taught shall cause such child to attend such school all the time such school is in session unless the child shall be excused by the school board of the district because his physical or mental condition is such as to prevent his attendance at school for the period required or because he was instructed in a private school, approved by the school board, for a number of weeks equal to that, in which, the public school was in session the common English branches, or having acquired these branches, in other more advanced studies. Any person who does not comply with the requirements of this section shall be fined ten dollars for the first offense and twenty dollars for every sub- sequent offense, for the use of the district. Under the exist- ing law, a town constitutes a district.

Our schools as a whole have been wide awake and progres- sive. Some schools have been interrupted by sickness, but every child has had the chance for thirty weeks schooling.

Earnest, faithful work has been done by the majority of pupils and teachers. Mistakes have been made and will con- tinue to be made till we reach the millenium. They are not

all made, however, by the school board and teachers. We must use double mirrors to see ourselves as others see us, then we shall be more charitable towards others and less so towards ourselves. No man's interest in the schools of his town should cease when his children leave them. In this work we must be broad minded enough to take in our neigh- bor ..

Your repair money has been judiciously expended, and while several schoolhouses need painting outside, we have no school buildings in use that are not comfortable quarters in cold weather. New floors have been laid in the Jones' Mills and Allen's Mills schoolhouses, which were much needed. The Jones' Mills schoolhouse has also been shingled, and painted inside and new seats added. The Iron Works schoolhouse has been painted inside and one side of the roof shingled. New windows have been put in at the Loon Pond schoolhouse and the woodhouse shingled.

In closing, we wish to express our appreciation of all courte- sy shown us during the past year.
