TOWN OF SANDWICH.
thirty-three parents appear. There is no better place to judge of a teacher's qualifications or a scholar's advancement than in the school-room; and when there is more frequent visiting on the part of the fathers and mothers of the children, then they will be better prepared to render righteous judgement, and by so doing give a new impetus to the work. Every child takes pleasure in showing his parents his capabilities and is encour- aged by their presence in the school-room. Certainly the teachers and School Board cannot be expected to have an in- terest paramount to that of the parents.
This year we have purchased for three of the schools "The Students' Cyclopedia" and both teachers and pupils are pleased with them. We hope to be able to provide the Cyclopedia for all the schools in the near future.
The school property is in need of many repairs. In some instances a few hours work will add greatly to the comfort of the teacher and pupil, while in other instances more extended repairs are fast becoming necessary. In order to meet these demands money is required. It is hoped that a generous amount for permanent repairs will be appropriated.
It is an object of concern to every parent and guardian, in fact every being endowed with intellect or interested in any form in education to try and devise methods for the instruction of the humblest of humanity, and to make useful knowledge possible for all children to obtain. The opening of the new century offers another starting point in the effort to carry the teacher and pupi! to still higher levels. The highest style of teaching is that which imparts character while it imparts knowl- elge. The teacher's position is one of responsibility ; her duty is not only t> teach the children, but to instill into their minds love for all that is good and abhorrence for all that is evil, and place them upon the right path to happiness, honor, and virtue, that they may become useful citizens and a credit to the com- muuity in which they live. The pupil who leaves school with knowledge and a PURPOSE is a thousand times more likely to inake a success of life than one who has only gained the knowl- edge. We think that our town is to be congratulated in having

so many good teachers who have their homes in our midst. Let all concerned bear this in mind : that the public school is New England's safeguard and future hope.
