Miss Langley has had some experience in teaching, and has the reputa- tion of being a good teacher. She manifested much interest in her pupils-labored hard to assist them in climbing up the hill of knowledge. The term, although short, was profitable.
Suffice it to say, that Miss Wright, in teaching the Winter term of this school, was as successful in reaching good results as in the other schools
25
which she has taught in this town.
DISTRICT No. 9.
Prudential Committee, Mr. John S. Emery.
Teachers,-Summer, Miss Ella A. Merrill; Winter, Mr. Horace E. Marion.
Whole No. Scholars,-Summer, 28; Winter, 35.

Wages of Teachers per month,-Summer, $20.00; Winter, $41.00. Appropriation,-Town, $85.86 ; Literary, $11.58; Railroad, $25.00.
This was Miss Merrill's first effort at teaching. Good order, prompt- ness in recitation, a satisfactory examination at the close, were charac- teristics of the school. Miss M. bids fair to make one of the best of teachers. She left this school with the kind regards of all.
Mr. Marion was considered by the members of his school as an ener- getic, first-class instructor. Under his tuition the school progressed harmoniously and profitably.
This school, notwithstanding it was deprived of some of its advantages last year, compares favorably with other schools in town.
DISTRICT No. 10. Prudential Committee, Obadiah Dustin.
Teacher :- Summer and Winter, Miss Laura E. Bradley.
Whole No. Scholars,-Summer, 20; Winter, 23. Average Attendance,-Summer, 9; Winter, 19. Length of School, weeks,-Summer, 11; Winter, 9. Wages of Teacher per month,-Summer, $10.66; Winter, $18.00. Appropriation,-Town, $58.35 ; Literary, $7.88; Railroad, $25.00.
Miss Bradley has stood at the head of this school, as its teacher, three terms in succession. Her schools have always appeared well when visited, and closed with good results.
GENERAL REMARKS.
The character of any community may be known by the condition of its schools. Where tasty, commodious, and conveniently arranged school- houses are in use, and energetic, faithful teachers employed to teach in them; where Prudential Committees and parents are often seen visiting the school, and taking an active, personal interest in educational matters -enterprise, intelligence, and thrift are the principal characteristics of such a community.
The town of Salem can justly pride itself on the excellence of its educational edifices in all of the Districts excepting one. In District No. 9 a new, elegant house has been erected the past year; in District No. 8 the house has been re-modeled-the uncouth, uncomfortable seats have given place to nice school-house furniture, which, together with other improvements, render the school-house almost as good as new. We hope District No. 5 will profit by these worthy examples.
It has been a general complaint that our schools have been shorter this year than usual. Your Committee can give two reasons as the cause in part, viz. : teachers' wages and the price of wood are considerably in advance of what they were formerly. No provision has been made by the town to meet these extra demands; consequently, the schools must be a little shorter. It is in the power of the voters of this town to remedy this evil. We hope some plan will be adopted to raise extra money for school purposes, so that our children may have their due share of schooling.
If the voters of each District will be particular to elect a competent man to the office of Prudential Committee-a man who will take an active interest in the school, and afford the time to visit it at least once or twice each term-a man who will take pains to secure the services of first-class teachers, even if he is obliged to pay high wages; if the parents will be personally interested, and co-operate with the teachers in making the schools interesting and attractive, by having their school-houses furnished with proper maps, globes, dictionaries, black-boards, clocks, etc .; if the children themselves will do their best in improving these advantages-
27
then nothing will be lost if we raise a little extra money, so that we can keep up with the times, pay our teachers good wages, and have our schools continue their usual time.
Your Committee has endeavored, the past two years, to dispose of two great evils incident to our schools-tardiness and irregular attendance. As the result, we give the following names who have not been absent or tardy once during each term :-
