REPORT OF SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS
I herewith submit my third annual report to the citizens and School Board of Chesterfield.
The work in the schools is progressing and keeping up to the standards laid down in the State Program of studies as adapted for the local schools. There are one or two wherein exceptions occur, but these will be overcome in another year. Some reasons for this are that many children have moved in from poorer schools or their parents have made it a custom to move every two or three years with the consequent loss in schooling to the children. The greatest progress is made where both teacher and pupils become a settled and contented unit. This with good attendance makes a good school.
The attendance in general is very good but there are still some families who persist in keeping children out of school by the day or half day and thereby retarding not only their own child but retarding the whole. Absence and tardy slips have been used in some cases to get the parent on record as being in knowledge of the absence. In one school tardiness and ab- sence has decreased through their use. In other cases the ex- cuses sent in are not such as to arouse confidence.
Last year we were fortunate enough to go through the year without any changes in the teaching staff. This year we have had two changes and these both at Spofford. The school is fortunate in the replacements which have been made. It is not often that good teachers can be so readily replaced. There are approximately forty pupils at Spofford this year with only
1
56
twenty at West Chesterfield. Consequently the two teachers are at Spofford and one at West Chesterfield.
The lighting, heating and ventilation of two buildings can be classed as superior. The third building needs better lighting arrangement or all that is necessary to make it su- perior.
Teachers remain at the buildings every noon hour and supervise the luncheons and play. This makes for greater moral welfare of the children both by preserving better order among the children and by keeping away outsiders or noon hour vis- itors. There is a greater preservation of property and the gen- eral appearance of the grounds is better.
In conclusion let me express my thanks to all who have contributed to make the work more worth while.
Respectfully yours,
WILLIAM J. ENGLISH,
Superintendent.
