Gatherings such as a joint luncheon meeting of civic clubs, whose officers are pictured above, and the exhibits of school children vied for attention during Centennial Week. The honors went to the murals painted by seventh and eighth grade pupils of public schools. That below portrays the immigrants of many nationalities who came here to settle and help make Manchester what it is.

"Quality that Satisfies" is still the ideal upon which the business continues to grow. The name R. G. Sullivan on a cigar today assures the same Choice Quality which inspired the growth of the business from 24,000 Cigars in 1874 to a present Annual Output of 70,000,000 Cigars.

Manchester was a small community of barely 10,000 people in 1846, and the West bank of the Merrimack was still com- pletely undeveloped when the drawings on this page were made. Above is a copy of a painting by J. B. Bachelder, titled "Manchester from Rock Rimmon," and dated 1843. Below is a re- production of a woodcut, dated about 1840.

Manchester from Rock Rimmon today presents a very different picture. On both sides of the river, the centurial city has ex- panded until little land remains unoccupied. And in its growth it has kept pace with progress, as witness the modern swimming pool at the foot of the "rock". Aerial view below shows the development of the city in contrast to the picture opposite.
