STEADMAN, DAVID-Served in the army from Ashburnham, after- ward removed to Claremont where he bought a firm and resided for several years. He had three children born in this town between 1786 and 1790. It is not known where he removed to after leaving Claremont. (See History of Ashburnham).


STEVENS, ELIHU-Enlisted Sept. 21, and served to Oct. 21, 1777, in Capt. Oliver Ashley's company ; (15.371). Died, April 2, 1798, aged 44. Brother of Henry, Josiah and Roswell.


STEVENS, HENRY-Enlisted May, 1778, in Capt. Wait's company, aged 21, receiving a bounty of £20, (14-598) ; also £6, (14-599). He had pre- viously served in 1776, and was in the service in May of that year ; (8-219). Also served in Walker's company of Hobart's regiment, from July to Septem- ber, 1777, (15-145) and two days in Spencer's party ; (11-376). Son of Elihu and brother of Josiah, Roswell and Elihu JJr. Died, Nov. 13, 1800, aged 43.


STEVENS, JOSIAH Ensign-Enlisted July 19, 1777, in Capt. Webber's company of Hobart's regiment, serving until Sept. 22. Marched from Wal- pole ; (15-146-8). Son of Elihu and brother of Roswell, Elibu JJr. and Henry. Father of Paren Stevens, Esq. Died, April 10, 1827, aged 74.

STEWART, JONAS-In the Bennington company, July, 1777 ; (15-27). Also enlisted in Capt. Taylor's company.


STONE, SAMUEL-Enlisted in Capt. Farwell's company of Col. Stark's regiment of the First N. H. Continental Line, March 12, 1777, aged 37 ; (14- 593). He was a son Matthias Stone, Esq.


SANKEE, CÆSAR-Enlisted in Capt. Wallingford's company of Col. Gilman's regiment, from December 5, 1776, to March 15, 1777, to re-enforce the Continental Army in New York ; (14-504) Pensioned Dec. 10. 1831, from Windsor County, Vt., he being at that time 90 years old ; (Rolls. Con- cord). He lived in Claremont for some time, and his wife, Phebe, is buried in the old yard on Broad street.


SPERRY, EBENEZER-Served in the Connecticut Continental Line and came to Claremont from New Haven, Conn., settling in what is called "Slab City." He was by trade a tailor and had a large family of children. Pen- sioned Feb. 28, 1833, at the age of 78, (Pension Rolls in State Library, Con- cord) at which time he resided in Claremont. Probably buried in Claremont, although no stone marks his grave.

TOWNER, BENJAMIN JR. - Was in the service May 30, 1776 ; (8-219).


TOWNER, COMFORT-From Sept. 21 to Oct. 21, 1777. to re-enforce Gen. Gates.


TAYLOR, JOSEPH-Was in the service May 30, 1776; (8-219). Also in the same year was engaged by Col. Wait to raise a company of Canadians, but the project was given up. Was also captain in Col. Bedel's regiment in 1778, (17-252) and in the searching party six days ; (11-376). Married, Jan- uary, 1762, Elizabeth Sumner, sister of "ol. Benjamin Sumner. Afterward lived in Cornish, N. H. [See also, roll of Capt. Taylor's company ].


TUTTLE, OLIVER-In the Ticonderoga company, June, 1777 ; (15-27). TUTTLE, SAMUEL-In the same company ; (15-27).

VERRY, JOHN-Enlisted July 21, 1777 in Walker's company of Hobart's regiment. Served to Sept. 21. Credited to Claremont by "Gilmore's Ben- nington."

WAIT, JOSEPH Lt. Col .- Enlisted as colonel of the Northern Continental Army. Was wounded by splinter from a gun carriage, from the effect of which he died, at Clarendon, Vt., Sept. 28th, 1776. He lived on the farm or- iginally granted to Gov. Wentworth in Claremont. Was a member of the Provincial Congress in May, 1775, and was the most prominent of those who served their country in the war for Independence, with the possible exception of Col. Ashley. A full account of this man is given in the "History of North Brookfield, Mass."


WARNER, DANIEL-In the Ticonderoga company. June, 1777 ; (15-27). WARNER, LEVI-In the same company ; (15-27).


WARNER, THOMAS Capt. - Enlisted and served from Connecticut in the Continental Line. Died, Feb. 7, 1818, aged 70; was great-grandfather of Henry and George Judkins, and lived in Claremont many years.


WATERHOUSE, - -Four days in the searching party ; (11-375-6).


WEST, JOHN-Enlisted Sept. 21. 1777. served to Oct. 21. in C'apt. Oliver Ashley's company to re-enforce Gen. Gates at Saratoga : (15-371). Died in Claremont, Nov. 23, 1810, aged 71.


WOODS, JOSEPH-Enlisted July 21, 1777, in Walker's company of Ho- bart's regiment ; (15-144). Credited to Claremont by "Gilmore's Bennington."


WRIGHT, JOSEPH-Enlisted April 12, 1778, in Capt. Wait's company of Stark's regimeut. age 39, for which he received the sum of £20 bounty ; (14- 598). Also, f6 from the state ; (14.599). "Kidder's Ist N. H. Regiment" says enlisted Jan. 1, 1777, discharged April 1, 1780.

YORK, CHRISTOPHER-Served from July 21, to Sept. 23, 1777 ; (15- 144). Died in Claremont, April 17, 1817, aged 68.


YORK, GERSHOM Corp .- Was in the service May 30. 1776 ; (8-219). Also in Capt. Ashley's company from Sept. 21 to Oct. 21. 1777, to re-euforce Gen. Gates at Saratoga ; (15-371). He removed after the war to Tunbridge, Vt., where he was alive in 1818, aged 81.

ADDENDUM.


PUTNAM, SOLOMON-Served in the Connecticut State Militia and was a servant to Gen. Israel Putnam. Removed to Claremont after the war, where he died, April 18, 1810, aged 55. Was grandfather to Solomon Putnam, now of Weathersfield, Vt.


PULLING, JOSEPH-Served in the Massachusetts Continental Line. Re- moved to Claremont after the war where he was pensioned June 8th, 1818, and died, Dec. 27, 1840, aged 86.


PECKINS, ALEXANDER-Served in the Massachusetts Continental Line, and was pensioned Jan. 18, 1833, at the age of 79. He had a wife and son die in the town, who are buried in the old cemetery in the village.


REDFIELD, AMBROSE-Served in the Connecticut Continental Line. Lived in Claremont several years, but moved back to Connecticut, where he died.


DIMOND, JACOB R .- Served in the army from Ashburnham, Mass., at various times. After the war he removed to Claremont and died there March 16, 1826, aged 67 years. (see History of Ashburnham). This name was originally spelled Roedimond and is so spelled in the town record books for several years. Later it was changed to Roe Dimond, then to Jacob R Dimond as it is now used.


BALDWIN. CALEB-Captain and Lieutenant of Connecticut Continental Line. Pensioned March 5, 1819. He died Dec. 6, 1823, aged 87 years. (Pension Rolls Concord and Gravestone ) .


PETTEE, WILLIAM-Matross, Mass., Militia. Pensioned Dec. 10, 1832 Died at Claremont April 14, 1837, aged 83 years.


COWLES, TIMOTHY-Soldier from Connecticut according to tradition of the family. Died Nov. 29, 1832, aged 78 years.


JACKSON, MOSES-Served in the war as servant of Maj. Draper for one year, then as private through the war. He removed to Claremont from Washington, N. H., and died there July 23, 1824 at the age of 62 years.


HANDERSON, GIDEON-Born in Sunderland, Mass., Oct. 9, 1753. Served as private in Capt. Noadiah Leonard's company of Amherst, Mass. The company was in the Battle if Bunker Hill. Married Jan. 1, 1778 Abagail Church of Amherst, Mass., and in 1779 removed to Claremont where he fol- lowed the occupation of a tanner until his death, July 10, 1825.
