R974.9 PREFACE.
OUR task is finished, and the result of three months' unremitting toil is before our patrons, who we are confident will pardon the unavoidable delay in the appear- ance of the book, when they are assured that its value has been thereby greatly in- creased ; especially in the Business Directory, embracing as it does the entire State, and containing also a list of more than eight thousand farmers,-a feature peculiar to this Directory.
The citizens of Newark will perhaps be surprised to learn that many persons re- fused to give us their names,-thus subjecting us to great annoyance ; nevertheless we are happy to say that we have more names than are contained in any Directory of Newark heretofore published, our volume containing over 20,000 names.
An Appendix, containing much useful information, has been added to the work. We take pleasure in acknowledging the kindness of many gentlemen who aided us in our labors.
