To Help You on Your Toll Calls Manual and Dial Telephones
A TOLL call is one to any tele- phone bearing the call number designation of a central office which is not included in your local service area. Your local service area is indi- cated on page 13.
Classes of Toll Calls
There are four classes of toll calls: Station-to-station toll calls, person- to-person toll calls, appointment toll calls, and messenger toll calls.
Station-to-Station Toll Calls
A station-to-station toll call is a call on which the calling party does not specify that a particular person or a particular Private Branch Ex- change extension station is to be reached. Station-to-station toll calls are handled more rapidly and at lower rates than person-to-person toll calls. Charge is made if anyone at the called station answers beginning at the time "at connection is completed between alling and called stations.
How to Place Toll Calls
On toll calls to points covered by the New York City Directory or by the Suburban Directory give the details of the call to the operator. If the telephone number cannot be found in the directory, obtain it from "Information."

Exception : On calls by number to Bridgeport, New Haven and Norwalk, Conn., Camden and Trenton, N. J., and Philadelphia, Pa., give first the name of the city and then the number to the opera- tor; e. g., "Philadelphia, Walnut 1234." If the number is not known, obtain it from "Information."
Note: If you are in doubt as to whether a call should be given to your operator or to the Long Distance operator, give the call to your operator.
Whenever possible the telephone number of - the desired telephone should be given. If, however, you give the name and address of the sub- seriber whose station you wish to reach, you should at the same time state that you will talk with anyone who answers at that telephone.
