FOR THE THIRTY .SEVENTH YEAR OF
AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE.

NEW-YORK :
PUBLISHED AT THE OLD ESTABLISHED DIRECTORY OFFICE,
Shakspeare- Gallery, BY DAVID LONGWORTH. July 4th-1812.
1762766
Just at the time of collecting the names for the Directory, the Corporation gave a new name to Bedlow street : Bancker street is now continued throughout what was called Bedlow- street ; this change of name was made by my collector in that quarter, I was ignorant of the change, or I should not have followed it ; for only the name being changed, the number of the houses in both streets remained the same, the consequence is, in Bancker-street two houses will be found of the same number, for what was 20 Bancker remains so ; and what was 20 Bedlow, is now also 20 Bancker ; some inconvenience in this case will ensue.
The Directory this year will be found to be superior to any other. as usual : the Register contains the Almanac, with the customary matter, excepting the List of Duties, which it was deemed unnecessary to insert in the present times-The List of Masonic Lodges. is more than ordinarily perfect, and I hope that the addition of the Marine Directory, will prove of value ; it shall be my endeavor to make it as correct as the na- ture of it will admit, and give it an annual revision.
The Directory this year, contains 17,750 names.

FROM ITINERANT TRIFLES,
For sale by D. Longworth, (price 25 cents)-which contains an Ode to J's Red Breeches. ".
Much has been said and written on the beauty and utility of national patriotic songs, which is unnecessary to repeat. They have been much admired and their beneficial effects in some measure allowed. To meric this, they ought always to be free from vulgar abuse and low scurrility, and avoid touching on events, which (however galling . for the moment they may have been) are no longer remembered ; consequently when such are the theme, with them the effusions of the Muse sink into obli, vion, and their object is defcated. The truly brave and magnanimous forget and forgive the wounds inflicted by War, nor do they irritate them by a puerile and malignant peevishness.
