TO THE PUBLIC. 4

As a book without an error would be more rare than one without a preface, so a Directory free from a misspelled name, or, a wrong number, would be a degree of perfection seldom if ever, attained. To make this kind of publica- tion generally correct, each citizen should be as ready to give his name and address, as the publisher himself is to insert it ; but excuses are made and fears expressed by individuals of jury or militia duty, or both, when their names are requested, as the probable consequence of complying with the request. Others, most readily give their names and place of business but refuse their residence ! And hence, when any such omission is discovered, it will be at- tributed to the carelessness of the publisher, and thus affect the reputation of his work.

It is believed, however, that commendable care has been exercised in col- lecting the information for this Directory. A very large portion of the city was twice canvassed, and if names, therefore, are either omitted or misspelled, or if numbers are incorrect, the fault has been beyond the control of the pub- lisher. The unusual number of names, nearly, fifty-five thousand, now pub- lished, were all written in the respective places with which they are connected. Ten reams of foolscap paper were required to write them, forming a manu- script of more than a mile in length, and which, together with all other writing done for this work, (of the usual width of paper) if placed in a direct line, would extend from the Battery to Canal Street.

To collect such a mass of names and arrange them alphabetically-to cor- rect such errors and harmonize such contradictions as presented themselves- to prepare and revise the manuscript-to read the proof-sheets and attend to the arrangements, generally, for issuing this work, has been no small labor. The undertaking on the contrary, has been attended with great anxiety, a peculiar sense of responsiblity, and has required unceasing watchfulness and energy ; and although it is believed that every precaution has been taken to avoid errors and omissions, still, they must as a matter of course, be expected. The next season, however, will enable the publisher to correct the removals, &c, by this, a printed Directory, and to expunge therefrom every error that may be discovered.

Sheldon.

In the arrangement of the names herein contained, the publisher can con- scientiously say that he did not resort to " the use of a borrowed Directory." But understanding the peculiarities of the task to be undertaken and the diffi- culties to be encountered in this enterprise-he was determined to rely on his . own resources-on a system tested by experience-and by that system, to- gether with industry and perseverance, to strive for the accomplishment of his wishes and the gratification of any expectation of the community, respect- · ing this publication. To say, however, that it is perfect in its arrangement,

EX-12-7.

TO THE PUBLIC.

or correct and complete in all its details, would indeed, be folly. The de- · termination is, however, to render it, eventually, more truly valuable as a · Directory, than any other yet offered to this public. And the publisher, there- . fore, will deem it both his duty and his interest, to lend a willing and attentive ear to any suggestion for its improvement. Indeed he would be materially aided in his annual task, should each business citizen happily feel and mani- fest, an interest in this publication and acquaint him of any error that may be discovered which would insure a most correct and complete Directory, and render this entirely such as the publisher desires and intends it shall be.

Considerable attention has been given to the arrangement of the miscella- neous information. The aim has been to render each department, firstly, as useful and convenient as possible, and secondly, as concise as practicable. The Banks, Postoffice, Insurance Companies, Packets, &c., are presented in a form considered the best for a business community. Several other departments are under consideration and will be added another season.

The numbers of several streets were changed on and after the first of May, but the new numbers are given in this work so far as ascertained. It is a question worthy of consideration, how far the convenience of the public is pro- moted by adding to the usual confusion of a May-day, that also, of old and new numbers, and at a time too when the names of the citizens are being taken. for the forthcoming Directory !

·

Those who examined this work in progress, admired its neat and beau- · tiful typographical appearance, and it is proper and just to say in this con- nexion, that the type was cast expressly for this publication, at the celebrated foundry of John T. White, Esq., and the printing executed by Messrs. George W. Wood & Co., 45 Gold Street.

.In conclusion, the publisher respectfully calls attention to the mechanical execution of this work-to the moderate price at which it is offered to the public, and believes that a liberal community will support the enterprise so far as its merits may deserve.

To the gentlemen who have aided in preparing this Directory, sincere and grateful thanks are due for the assiduity and faithfulness with which they have labored, and to them, individually and collectively, are most cheerfully extend- ed the best and most ardent wishes of

THE PUBLISHER.

DIRECTORY OFFICE, June 25th, 1842.
