FOREWORD
The purpose of this second volume of The Records of Christ Church is the permanent preservation of the vital statistics contained in the parish register.
In 1913 the Legislature of the State of New York enacted a com- prehensive measure governing the registration of vital statistics .* This law unified and systematized all previous laws of the State on the same subject. The previous legislation had been sporadic and of com- paratively late date. In the colonial period no records of births, marriages and deaths were kept by the towns, cities or counties of New York. The State Board of Health, organized in 1880, issued its first report in 1881. This report describes the unsatisfactory condi- tion of the records of the State and refers to the scattered legisla- tion bearing upon registration, the earliest occurring in 1847.
The City of Poughkeepsie, chartered in 1854, began to keep a record of deaths in 1865. In 1882, following the report made in 1881 by the State Board of Health, books were opened for births and mar- riages.
The register of the parish of Christ Church was begun in 1766 and thus for the century between 1766 and 1865 it supplies a substan- tial fraction of the vital statistics which the village and (later) the city of Poughkeepsie failed to record.
These statistics are in frequent demand, partly for legal needs, partly for matters of personal interest. They aid in the establishment of claims to property ; in the procurement of pensions, passports and employment-papers ; in proving parentage and marriage; in tracing family connections. By their presentation in this volume in alpha- betical order their sum total is rendered immediately available, with- out waste of time and effort in search. All told these entries number :

4,218
Marriages
1,163
Deaths and Burials

In the preparation of this book the editor has received assistance from two sources, without which help the task might never have been brought to completion. Miss Amy Elizabeth Pearce volunteered clerical co-operation in the transcription of the original register and rendered the same with ability. The Hon. Macgrane Coxe, A.M.,

grandson of the late Thomas L. Davies of Poughkeepsie (whose life-long and notable membership in the parish of Christ Church is shown in The Records of Christ Church, Volume I, pages 180, 332), made it financially possible to publish the editor's manuscript and, by his firm faith that the book would be of use to the community, gave aid and comfort to the editor during the period of its preparation. The editor wishes to record her gratitude for the sympathetic interest of these friends, which has been consistently maintained through several years and in the face of all discouragements. The work was begun soon after the publication (1911) of Volume I of The Records of Christ Church and it was intended to have it ready for the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the parish in October, 1916. Public and private circumstances combined, however, to postpone its completion until 1919. For moral support and for untrammeled access to the original register the editor is indebted to the rector of the parish, the Rev. Alexander Griswold Cummins, A.M., Litt.D., whose breadth of view in all matters pertaining to Christ Church has helped her greatly in all her work.
A volume such as this is of worth only in so far as it is accurate. Every care has been taken to guard against errors and the editor is confident that it is as nearly a correct transcription of the original as could be made. It is believed by those concerned in its production that it will prove of practical value in many ways. Back of and beyond that belief, however, has been a further impelling motive for its pre- sentation. A desire to perpetuate the memory of the men and women who have builded the parish of Christ Church and who have helped to make its honorable history has inspired and colored all the labor involved. These pages are offered as a tribute to the many who have gone before, who have left to their successors a legacy of high tra- tions to maintain.
HELEN WILKINSON REYNOLDS
The printing of this book was begun by the Enterprise Publishing Company of Poughkeepsie, N. Y. When it was half done the printing establishment was sold and dismantled. The work was then transferred to and completed by the Hansman & Pralow Company of Poughkeepsie. The change from one press to another occasioned some mechanical difficulties which are more or less evident in the finished volume and this statement is made in explanation of the same. Ac- knowledgement is also here made of the courtesy and consideration accorded to a peculiarly exacting order by both the firms engaged upon it.

EDITORIAL PREFACE
The entries of baptisms on the register of Christ Church were begun October 19, 1766, and continue to date with but few interrup- tions. The breaks in continuity coincide with the period of the War of the Revolution and with vacancies in the rectorship of the parish. All but 28 of the 4,218 entries, here presented (which extend to and include October 18, 1916), are arranged by surnames in alphabetical order. The small remainder (appended to the main list) are given chronologically, under the head of "Miscellany."
The form of the entries varies. In early years it was brief, fre- quently omitting the names of the parents of the person baptized. About the middle of the nineteenth century the custom was begun of making more detailed reports and by 1888 a register was introduced having printed forms to be filled in.
From 1799 to 1805 the Rev. Philander Chase was rector of Christ Church and on September 26, 1801, he instituted a census of the house- holds under his pastoral care. His reasons for this action will be found stated in his own words on pages 321-322 of Volume I of The Records of Christ Church. The list he compiled is included herewith, although it is probable that it is incomplete.
Study of the four volumes of the parish register is repaid by the sidelights thrown upon various phases of the parochial life-story. Prepared, as this book has been, in the years of the Great War, the racial make-up of the congregation is a point of interest.
The group was gathered together originally from American-born individuals of British and Dutch descent. They, and those of their blood who came after them, were welded into a nucleous typically American, which has always been the center and inspiration of a strong and living organism.
Before 1800 three Frenchmen stand out in conspicuous isolation in the parish,-Charles Martin Jean Pierre DeVemont, Richard De- Cantillon, Francois Chandonet. They are practically the only French who have been prominent in these annals.
The first noticeable influx of foreign-born occurred in the 1830's and 1840's, when unfavorable economic and industrial con- ditions in the British Isles brought to the parish a number of English and Protestant Irish families. These were quickly and easily ab- sorbed into the American equivalent of the Churches of England and Ireland.
XIII
During the rectorship of the Rev. Henry L. Ziegenfuss, S.T.D., (1875-1894), there was a pronounced accession of German Lutherans. Dr. Ziegenfuss was of German descent ("Pennsylvania Dutch") and had formerly been a Lutheran minister. The German population of Poughkeepsie increased largely in the last quarter of the nineteenth century and through Dr. Ziegenfuss's indefatigable pastoral work many were baptized and confirmed in Christ Church, who have been faithful and devoted parishioners.
A few individuals of the African race have at all times in the course of the parish history been included in its membership. There have been both slaves and free negroes in this number, and they should be mentioned as especially loyal and devoted in the goodly company of the faithful.
Lay assistance in the procurement of candidates for baptism began approximately in the 1840's. The pioneer and leader was undoubtedly Mrs. Thomas L. Davies,-daughter of the Rev. Dr. Reed, the rector. Contemporary with and following Mrs. Davies were-among sev- eral-Mrs. Horace Sague, Miss Lydia Ingraham Phinney, Miss Sarah Van Ingen, Miss Mary Allen, Miss Mary A. Hart. In later years such individual service as these women rendered was largely organ- ized and directed through the Sunday School and parochial societies.
The Parish School (in existence 1845-1884) was the source of numerous baptisms and confirmations. Permanency was not, however, a marked quality of the material drawn from this institution.
The pupils of the private boarding schools of Poughkeepsie have formed an interesting feature in the life of Christ Church since the 'thirties. From Cottage Hill Seminary, the Female Academy, the Collegiate Institute for Girls and from College Hill (later Riverview Military Academy), for boys, as, also, from Vassar College, many young people have come, asking for baptism and confirmation.
The successive changes in fashion in given names in the last cen- tury and a half are clearly indicated in these pages, especially among those for women. In the eighteenth century there was a noticeable absence of the Old Testament nomenclature which was prevalent in Puritan New England, and names of the class of Ann, Eliza, Jane, Mary, Sarah, etc., were in use. Just before and after 1800, the mothers of the community must have been addicted to fiction-reading, for names of such a flavor as Aminta, Arabella, Belinda, Belphame, Clarinda, Clarissa and Euphemia were given to the daughters, the usage being carried to a logical conclusion when a child was called "Fanny Burner,"-presumably in honor of Fanny Burney, the author
XIV
of Evelina. As the nineteenth century wore on, standard names pre- vailed such as Margaret, Caroline, Elizabeth, Katherine, etc. Within recent years another tendency, paralleling the last mentioned, has shown itself, an instance of the type referred to being "Rowena Pearl."
It will be seen from all this that a book filled with statistics, seem- ingly dull and dry, may really contain also much of human nature, of humor, of history, of manners and customs. All of which may be found by any who will take the trouble to look for them.
