EDITORIAL PREFACE
In the parish of Christ Church, Poughkeepsie, the churchyard of the parish property on Market street was used for interments from the time (approximately) that the first church building was erected (1774) until (approximately) the purchase of the "English Burying Ground" at Academy and Montgomery streets in 1828. After 1828 the churchyard was used only occasionally and in 1888 all stones remaining in it were removed to the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery.
The "English Burying Ground" was used for interments from 1828 until the 'seventies. In 1887 a portion of it was cleared for the erection of the present Christ Church and a number of stones were removed to the Pough- keepsie Rural Cemetery. What was formerly called the "English Burying Ground" is now known as Christ Church Square. Since the 'seventies paro- chial interments have as a rule been made in the Poughkeepsie Rural Ceme- tery.
About 1901 a survey was made of Christ Church Square on which is shown the location of all stones remaining on the property at that date. Many of these stones were afterward laid flat and gradually became over- spread with turf. In 1911 the editor copied in full all inscriptions then to be found. While the "Survey List" and Miss Reynolds's list duplicate each other in part, the former contains more names and the latter contains more detailed data. They are both therefore presented for comparison.
Three original sources supply information of the deaths and burials that have occurred in the parish of Christ Church. They are:
